Weston Dressler released from CFL team; Are the Chiefs involved?

Doug Pensinger

An all-star receiver from the CFL worked out with the Chiefs a few weeks ago. And today he was released from his CFL team so he could sign with an NFL team. Hmm...

Following up on a story we shared a few weeks ago...

The Kansas City Chiefs earlier this month worked out CFL wide receiver Weston Dressler of the Saskatchewan Rough Riders. He is a star in the CFL with lots of fans in the Saskatchewan area. He is a smaller receiver so you'll get your usual Wes Welker comparisons that every small receiver gets.

At last check, Dressler was under contract in the CFL until mid-February. But today comes news from multiple Canadian news outlets that the Rough Riders will release Dressler.

So does this mean he is signing with the Chiefs?

I can't say that I know that for sure. The Chiefs are, as far as I can tell, the only known team to work Dressler out. So it certainly makes sense that if the Rough Riders are releasing him to pursue the NFL that the Chiefs could be involved.

Here's what Dressler said a few weeks ago about his workout in Kansas City:

No those (Chiefs quarterbacks Alex Smith and Chase Daniels) guys weren't throwing the balls although they were walking around the facility a bit after so I got a chance to see those guys.  As far as the workout goes there was just one other receiver there with me and some other players doing other drills as well.  But there were just two receivers and basically they ran us through what their route tree would look like and some of the types of routes they would expect us to run if we wound up there in their offense.  They got a chance to see how'd they'd envision us with them so we were able to see what we're capable of as players like catching the ball and running with the ball.  It was nice to get on the field and run around again.

There is a Rough Riders press conference at 4 p.m. today.

We'll update when we know more.
