My Chiefs Offseason Outlook

Hello Chiefs Fans I have been really looking at how Andi Reid and John Dorsey went about the offseason last year and it led me to really look at this upcoming season with a different perspective. So lets get to it.

First order of Business:

Trading Brandon Flowers, yes that is right trade Brandon Flowers. I thought coming into last season that someone was going to be let go either being cut or being traded because of the new coaching staff and how they see players working in there systems. That didn't happen last year I absolutely think that happens this year. It is hard for me to come to this conclusion considering I love Brandon Flowers and what he brings to the table but not in this system he just isn't a good press man cover corner which is why he was eventually moved to play the slot and Marcus Cooper was moved to the outside at the end of the season, and while Cooper showed promise I think that move says a lot about how Reid feels about Flowers and his ability to play in the system they have installed.

Who is going to be looking to trade for a corner like Flowers? Almost every team I think would be interested in a pro bowl corner. I looked at who at the top of the second would consider giving up that pick for Flowers and there was no one that I thought would do it. So I came to San Francisco we traded with them last year and they have multiple picks again this year and don't have a ton of holes to fill. But one hole they do need to fill is at corner Carlos Rogers is the best corner on their team and he is going to be 32 and account for 6+ million against the cap this year so I look for them to cut Rogers and look for a better replacement. In come Flowers, with the multiple picks that the 49ers have I think we could ask for the 30th pick in the 1st round for Flowers and the 49ers would oblige and be happy with the compensation that they gave up to get a player of Flowers caliber in the first round.

Restructuring Some Contracts:

This is a big one in my eyes as a fan there are two players on this team that need to be restructured and that is Tamba Hali and Eric Berry. I think both are phenomenal players and both fit our system very well but Hali is getting paid too much money. Especially when you watch him against good LT's they know he has one signature move speed rushing around the edge. A good LT can just push him straight down the field while his QB can move up into the pocket.

Next is Eric Berry he is one of my favorite players on this team but I don't believe he is the best safety in the league and that is how he is getting paid, top 5 safety money sure at a price of $6 to $7 million not $10+ million, this has to be done in order to bring on some quality free agents to make this team better.

Free Agents:

There are several players that I think could come in and play a very big role for us this upcoming year and help us get that long awaited playoff win in the first round.

Mike Neal- DE free agent of the Green Bay Packers, if anyone knows this guy you think it would be Dorsey he started 10 games for the Packers this year and he had 47 tackles, 5 sacks, 1 FF, and 1 INT. He is listed as and OLB but could and would play DE in our system and could even move to OLB if Hali is let go after next season he is olny 26 years old as well.

Wesley Woodyard- ILB I would love nothing more than taking a player from the Broncos because I hate that team but this would be an outstanding pick up for us. Lets be honest DJ isn't getting any younger and he isn't nearly as good in coverage as he was two years ago. Woodyard might be the best coverage ILB in the league. He had 84 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 2 FF, and 1 INT. I am a firm believer that we need someone that can take the pressure off DJ and although Jordan was good this year Woodyard could take us to a whole new level.

Jeremy Maclin- I know this might be the pick that everyone is saying is going to happen and I would love for Maclin to be a part of the chiefs next year it would give us a whole new dimension on this offense, but don't be surprised if the Eagles make a serious push to keep him. He is still young and has shown in the past he has what it takes to be a very good WR in the NFL.

I know that the Chiefs will probably bring in more than just these guys but these are the guys that I think could make a very big impact on this team going forward.

The Draft: I know this might be a little premature for a mock draft so I will only do the first 4 rounds and what I think will happen. Since we traded Brandon Flowers to the 49ers early into the offseason we now have two first round picks 1 3rd round and 1 4th round that I will be talking about.

23rd- Justin Gilbert- (CB)There is a very good chance that Gilbert is off the board here but if he isn't we have to take him here he is probably the best man coverage corner in the draft this year and he has excellent return ability just in case we don't retain McCluster.

30th (From San Fran)- Calvin Pryor- (FS)I have seen multiple mock drafts that are projecting us to take a WR in the first round, but I think we are going to bring a good WR in free agency which will mean we don't have to put a big need on WR in the beginning of the draft. Pryor is another guy that may go higher than this pick but I don't think so and when he is there we make this pick without thinking about it.

87th- Bruce Ellington- (WRS)Since we took Defense with our first two picks and we added Maclin in free agency we take arguably the best slot WR in this draft class I know he is undersized but he has some serious play making ability and he could be what Reid and Dorsey will be looking for on offense to take some heat off of Charles.

119th- Pierre Desir-(CB) A small school prospect but he has some intangibles that I think will translate well into the NFL the only problem that I could see coming up is the competition that he played against.

I know that this looks like a lot of time and money spent on defense but we need it the defense was so dominant in the first 9 games and I am now convinced its because we had people in positions that just plain weren't good, and people in positions that they are not built for (Flowers). I think if we could land Gilbert and Pryor in the first round and Neal and Woodyard in Free Agency we could be even better than we were for the first 9 games of the season. Rookies are going to make mistakes but long term we could be fielding a defense that is talked about more than the Seahawks and 49ers Defenses are. Bringing in Maclin and Ellington are just two more play makers for Smith to have even though he proved to me that he doesn't need them. Alex took over the game against the Colts with out several pieces this team doesn't need a lot of help on the offense a few capable WR's and some offensive linemen.

I hope you all like the post and look forward to hearing all of your feedback.
