The Indianapolis Colts feature several players who have crossed paths with Kansas City Chiefs players and coaches in their playing career, both in college and the NFL. Here's a run down of some of the more interesting connections between the teams as they prep for the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
Several former Colts and Chiefs were all a part of the Miami Dolphins in recent years. For the Colts, CB Vontae Davis (2009-11), C Samson Satele (2007-08) and LB Erik Walden (2008-10) and for the Chiefs, CB Sean Smith (2009-12), TE Anthony Fasano (2008-12), and Defensive Assistant/Secondary Coach Al Harris (2010) were on Miami's roster together. Harris was a cornerback at the time.
In addition, several players were also members of the San Francisco 49ers in recent years, including Colts NT Aubrayo Franklin (2007-10), DT Ricky Jean Francois (2009-12) and LB Cam Johnson (2012) and Chiefs QB Alex Smith (2005-12) and WR A.J. Jenkins (2012).
Some Chiefs and Colts used to play for the other team. Chiefs fans will recognize names like
Indianapolis CB Jalil Brown, who spent 2011-12 in Kansas City. (Edit: Turns out, Brown was cut and claimed by the Dolphins. Nevermind.) Andy Studebaker was a member of the Chiefs from 2008-12. Meanwhile Chiefs WR Donnie Avery was a member of the Colts for the 2012 season.
Finally, an odd amount of players and coaches all were together at the University of Illinois (of all places). Indianapolis Offensive Line Coach Joe Gilbert (2009-11) served as Illinois' offensive line/assistant head coach and Secondary Coach Mike Gillhamer (2011) held the same title while CB Vontae Davis (2005-08), G Hugh Thornton (2009-12), Kansas City G Jeff Allen (2008-11), G Jon Asamoah (2006-09) and WR A.J. Jenkins (2008- 11) were all part of the roster.
