NFL roster cuts 2013: Kansas City Chiefs remaining position battles

John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports

It's about that time: Cut down day. The Chiefs will be trimming their current 75-man roster to 53 players by 5 p.m. (Arrowhead Time) on Saturday evening. We've done our Chiefs 53-man roster prediction but there are plenty more questions about roster spots, position battles and more.

1. Cyrus Gray or Shaun Draughn?

We know Jamaal Charles and Knile Davis are locked in at the Chiefs running back position. If the Chiefs keep three running backs, which most of us think they will, then it's between Gray and Draughn.

I went with Gray in my Chiefs 53-man roster projection but you can make a case for Draughn as well. In fact, up until Thursday's game against Green Bay, Draughn seemed like the pick here.

2. Who are the final two receivers?

I'm pretty sure Devon Wylie will make it, so maybe this question is really who is the final receiver.

Locked in right now: Dwayne Bowe, Donnie Avery, Dexter McCluster, AJ Jenkins

Fighting for the last spot: Junior Hemingway, Rico Richardson, Frankie Hammond Jr., Josh Bellamy

3. Is the offensive line already set?

I think so.

In: Branden Albert, Jon Asamoah, Rodney Hudson, Jeff Allen, Eric Fisher, Geoff Schwartz, Donald Stephenson, Eric Kush

Out: Matt Reynolds, Rokevious Watkins, Tommie Draheim

4. A.) What's up with Tony Moeaki? and B.) What to do at tight end?

Moeaki's situation affects this. He has a shoulder fracture and should miss about 12 weeks, which is a long time. The Chiefs can place him on IR at the cut down deadline, which would count as one of the cuts and free up a roster spot. If the Chiefs keep Moeaki on the roster, then I wonder if they're going to use the IR-designated to return on him. You can't use that until Wednesday so the Chiefs would have to hold him on the roster until then.

So then. You take care of Moeaki -- he's either on IR or IR-designated to return, but he's no longer on the active roster. What's next at tight end?

Anthony Fasano and Travis Kelce are in. So is it Kevin Brock or Demetrius Harris? Let's face it, we don't know a whole lot about either of them but Harris has a unique story so we gravitate towards him. I picked Brock, but this could easily go either way.

5. Picking between Marcus Dixon, Anthony Toribio, Mike Catapano and Austen Lane

Let's say Tyson Jackson, Mike DeVito and Allen Bailey are in. I have the Chiefs keeping five defensive ends.

Pick two among those four. I kept Dixon and Toribio on that list.

6. One linebacker spot

Do we feel pretty good about this group making the roster? Derrick Johnson, Akeem Jordan, Nico Johnson, Tamba Hali, Justin Houston, Frank Zombo.

That leaves five guys fighting over one spot: Zac Diles, Darin Drakeford, Ridge Wilson, Josh Martin, Orie Lemon.

7. The safety question

Let's say the Chiefs keep six. These guys are probably in: Eric Berry, Kendrick Lewis, Husain Abdullah, Quintin Demps,

Which leaves two spots for this group: Tysyn Hartman, Sanders Commings Bradley McDougald, Malcolm Bronson.

The first three are the ones that you'll have a tough time choosing from. Sanders Commings hasn't done anything but the Chiefs may not cut a fifth round pick.
