Kansas City Chiefs 53-man roster projection: Pre-NFL roster cuts edition

John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports

With NFL roster cuts on their way, let's take one last prediction at the Kansas City Chiefs 53-man roster. KC Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and GM John Dorsey have had an entire offseason, training camp and four preseason games to do their evaluations. There have been a number of tweaks to this 53-man roster since the last time I did one before training camp. More reading: Chiefs roster | Chiefs depth chart | Chiefs roster cuts

QB (3): Alex Smith, Chase Daniel, Tyler Bray

Out: No one

Not a difficult one to pick. This one is obvious considering Ricky Stanzi has already been cut. The only question is the order of these three. Is it Alex, Chase and Tyler? Or Alex, Tyler and Chase? Some might say it should be the latter despite what the Chiefs depth chart says.

RB (3): Jamaal Charles, Knile Davis, Cyrus Gray

Out: Shaun Draughn

OK, OK. Gray over Draughn? I thought Gray was more impressive last night than Draughn has been this preseason. But Draughn has had a better offseason overall than Gray, and he's often been running ahead of Gray, who led the running backs with 28 snaps last night. I'm going with a gut feeling, which is a theme you'll find in my 53-man roster.

FB (1): Anthony Sherman

Out: Toben Opurum

Not really any surprise here. I like Opurum though. With Reid's affection for fullbacks, I wonder if he could be a practice squad candidate.

WR (6): Dwayne Bowe, Donnie Avery, Dexter McCluster, AJ Jenkins, Devon Wylie, Junior Hemingway

Out: Josh Bellamy, Frankie Hammond Jr., Rico Richardson

I just couldn't get Richardson on the roster. Devon Wylie brings more in the return game so he picks up that spot. Can anyone find a way to get Rico on the team? Please tell me. He's one of my favorite undrafted free agents.

OL (8): Branden Albert, Jon Asamoah, Rodney Hudson, Jeff Allen, Eric Fisher, Geoff Schwartz, Donald Stephenson, Eric Kush

Out: Matt Reynolds, Rokevious Watkins, Tommie Draheim, Steven Baker

No surprises here. As noted earlier, the o-line seems set -- barring roster cuts from other teams.

TE (4): Anthony Fasano, Travis Kelce, Tony Moeaki Kevin Brock

Out: Demetrius Harris

Moeaki's 12-week injury means the Chiefs have to do something. They can't just leave him on the roster all season. So I predict they will hold onto him during this round of cuts, and then place him on IR-designated to return on September 3, the first day you can. Harris, who needs time to grow physically, gets the practice squad. Brock is more ready right now, and had three times as many snaps last night as Harris.

DE (5): Tyson Jackson, Mike DeVito, Allen Bailey, Marcus Dixon, Anthony Toribio

Out: Austen Lane, Mike Catapano

Mike Catapano becomes the second Chiefs draft pick to get cut (following Braden Wilson). Lane didn't play much last night. Not sure why.

NT (2): Dontari Poe, Jerrell Powe

Out: No one

OLB (4): Tamba Hali, Justin Houston, Frank Zombo, Edgar Jones

Out: Josh Martin, Orie Lemon

Zombo!!! He got a pick against his former team on Thursday night. Jones brings a lot in special teams. Josh Martin has a real shot to make the team, but I can't get him on.

ILB (4): Derrick Johnson, Akeem Jordan, Nico Johnson, Zac Diles

Out: Darin Drakeford, Ridge Wilson

I went back and forth on Diles. Special teams help gets him on the team.

CB (4): Brandon Flowers, Sean Smith, Dunta Robinson, Jalil Brown

Out: Greg Castillo, Semaj Moody, Kennard Cox

The only question is Jalil Brown, but he's a solid special teamer.

S (6): Eric Berry, Kendrick Lewis, Husain Abdullah, Quintin Demps, Tysyn Hartman, Sanders Commings

Out: Bradley McDougald, Malcolm Bronson

The toughest position group on this 53-man roster projection. Like Rico, Bradley McDougald is one of my undrafted free agent favorites. But I just can't get him on the team. I can't take off Commings, who was a draft pick and the Chiefs have carried on the roster this long already. I'm not ready to put him over Hartman. I don't know how to get him on.
