Packers vs. Chiefs preseason 2013: A brief history between KC and GB (besides that whole Super Bowl I thing)

Wesley Hitt

The Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers have little history with each other, outside of that pesky Super Bowl.

The Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs will face each other on Thursday night at Arrowhead Stadium, marking the fourth consecutive year these two have met in the preseason.

The history between these two is rich, something not often said when talking about the Chiefs and an NFC team. In the preseason, Kansas City is 6-7-1 all-time while holding a decisive edge in the regular season, going 7-2-1 against the Pack.

Of course, the most important game between these two foes is Super Bowl I, which Green Bay won 35-10 at the Los Angeles Coliseum. The Chiefs beat the Buffalo Bills at War Memorial Stadium in the AFL Championship to advance to the inaugural Super Bowl, with the Packers topping the Dallas Cowboys in the old Cotton Bowl in the NFL title game.

Preseason: 6-7-1
Reg. season: 7-2-1

The other meeting of note took place in 2011. Green Bay came to Arrowhead with a 13-0 record, only to be thwarted by Kyle Orton and a defense that arrived in a nasty mood. While one of the most exciting games and biggest upsets in recenty years, that was the game that earned Romeo Crennel a head coaching job for the next year. So.

Andy Reid has a connection to the Packers, having coached there as an assistant from 1992-98. General manager John Dorsey also came from Green Bay after playing there from 1984-88 and becoming an executive between 1991-2012 sans one season spent in Seattle.

Players who were both Packers and Chiefs worthy of mention include John Brockington and few others. Feel free to mention those I forgot about in the comments. (Lookin' at you, Frank Zombo and Anthony Toribio!)
