Kansas City Chiefs cut Brad Madison, claim o-lineman off waivers

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs have cut long snapper Brad Madison and claimed offensive lineman Ricky Henry off waivers.

For the second consecutive week the Kansas City Chiefs have released a player with local ties. Last week it was linebacker Chad Kilgore and this week it is long snapper Brad Madison, who went to Missouri. The Chiefs waived Madison and claimed guard Ricky Henry off the waiver wire.

Madison's release is not a surprise. Earlier in camp Chiefs special teams coach Dave Toub said that Madison was brought in because incumbent long snapper Thomas Gafford had struggled on some snaps the year before. Toub also admitted that Gafford was leading that battle. So it appears the Chiefs have settled on Gafford while releasing Madison so he can get in on another team before the season starts.

Henry is an offensive guard coming out of Nebraska. The Chicago Bears first signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2011 and since then he has spent time with the Atlanta Falcons and most recently New Orleans Saints. The Chiefs bio of him reads:

Henry (6-4, 310) has seen action in two contests in two NFL seasons with the Chicago Bears (2011) and the New Orleans Saints (2012). He originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Bears in 2011 where he served the majority of his time on the club's practice squad roster. After being released by the Bears on Aug. 31, 2012, he was signed by the Saints where he served primarily on their practice squad. Henry was released by New Orleans on Monday, Aug. 19. The Omaha, Neb., native played collegiately at the University of Nebraska where he earned first-team All-Big 12 honors. He prepped at Omaha Burke High School in Omaha, Neb.

The Chiefs claimed Henry off waivers, which is a good time to remind you that the Chiefs hold the top waiver spot. That means they get first choice on players who are waived.
