I am seeing some over-reactionary, knee-jerk posts around here about how the sky is falling, Smith obviously sucks, our WRs suck, our O-line is crap and on and on and on. Let's step back and get a little perspective. Let's not forget that we were a 2-14 team last year that just had the worse season for this franchise EVER. Let's remember that we just played the team that went to the SUPERBOWL. Let's also not forget that just before Smith left at halftime we were WINNING that game. That's right....we had the lead. In fact we lead for much of the game. But, all this is PRECISELY the reason I warned people ahead of time to take these preseason games with a grain of salt. They mean NOTHING. We cannot tell one way or the other. We didn't play Charles. San Fran's Kaep played very few snaps. Both teams played vanilla and neither team game-planned. San Fran is of course deeper but let's keep in mind that a) they went to the Super Bowl b) we just blew everything up this year and replaced almost all of our coaching staff and implemented two new schemes. I'll bet the same ones panicking now were also the same ones panicking in Vermeil's first year and saying he sucked and we sucked and calling Trent Green "TrINT" and calling Priest a bum. Then look what happened the next year. The point is, we are going to have ups and downs folks and we are NOT going to be able to get an accurate gauge on this team until the games are for real.
I honestly do not know what the future holds for us. I wish I could tell you. I really do. None of us know though. We're not going to be world-beaters just because we got a new coach and QB. But we're also not going to be that big ball of suck we saw last year. I'd say the truth is probably closer to in-between. Please, for your own sanity and health, don't freak out over preseason or even regular season just because we don't come out of the gate and steamroll teams like we're the freaking 49ers or Ravens or whoever. Just remember where we came from and what it took for us to get here...then enjoy the ride.
