Jamaal Charles injury updates: Here's what we know right now (Tuesday AM edition)

Denny Medley-US PRESSWIRE

We can only HOPE that the next injury update on KC Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles will come on Tuesday morning. That would suggest he's at practice, which is the news we all want to hear after he went down with a foot strain in Monday's practice. While we wait, here's a run down on everything we know about Charles and the foot injury he suffered in Monday morning's practice.

1. Jamaal hurts right foot during practice, "carted off"

Ah, the "carted off' phrase. A good way to scare the hell out of someone in August. I wasn't at Monday's practice but every reporter in attendance confirmed that Charles was indeed "carted off". Except ... there's a little more context that isn't easy to provide in 140 characters.

Read this article from the KC Star. It says that Charles walked off the field under his own power, talked to trainers on the sideline, then went to the medical tent on one end of the field and only then did he hop in a cart to be taken to the locker room.

There is a giant hill between the field and the locker room, which is why everyone who is hurt is "carted off". In fact, look at my camp report from July 31 -- pictures of three separate players carted off, including Dwayne Bowe!

2. Andy Reid called it a foot strain

"Jamaal Charles hurt his foot," Reid said after practice, comments via the Chiefs. "He had an x-ray done on it, and it was negative. It's a foot strain, and we'll see how he does and take precautionary measures."

3. Knile Davis and then Shaun Draughn replaced Charles in practice

Along with Cyrus Gray, that's the group that would replace Charles if he missed any time.

Man, I am really, really happy that this injury doesn't appear to be serious. Those guys may be fine players in time but they're not ready to carry the load right now. The Star has a nice anecdote on Davis explaining this.

4. One report stated the Chiefs were 'privately' concerned about the injury

ESPN's Adam Schefter said on SportsCenter that the Chiefs were "privately" concerned about Charles' injury and that they were hoping for the best while bracing for the worst.

This set off the alarm bells.

But this has led to...

5. Every public comment from the Chiefs has been encouraging

There was Reid's initial words after practice, calling it a foot strain.

There was John Dorsey, on SiriusXM NFL Radio, calling it "more precautionary than anything'.

There was Andy Reid to SiriusXM NFL Radio suggesting Charles could possible practice on Tuesday.

Then, several hours later, Reid joined Kevin Kietzman in drive time and again suggested Charles could practice on Tuesday.

It's not so much about whether he practices on Tuesday or Wednesday or whenever. It's that this is not a serious enough injury that we're talking about him practicing so quickly. A few days, a week ... whatever. Just so long as it's not a few months.

6. Tuesday's practice is the next big date

I like to say that what coaches say, especially what they say about injuries, doesn't matter. It's what they do and the reps they give players on the field that matters. Actions speak louder than words.

So let's see what Reid does with Charles on Tuesday morning. Resting him isn't necessarily a cause for concern, but playing him is a cause for celebration.

7. Charles is not (yet) ruled out of Friday's game against the 49ers
