One of the questions during our live KC Chiefs chat yesterday was whether Brad Childress, "spread game analyst", and Chris Ault, the creator of the pistol and a consultant for Andy Reid, were in town and participating in training camp. I couldn't confirm at the time whether they were and now I can: They're both in town.
I asked Reid after practice if they were both in town, and he confirmed that they were. Childress was actually calling penalties today as a referee. I did not see where Ault was but he is indeed there according to Reid. The fact that all the coaches wear the same outfit doesn't make it easy on us spotting who's who.
"[Ault] and Brad go over some of the spread stuff that we're doing," Reid said. "They work that and they sit in on all the meetings. They are knowledge. A big file full of knowledge, so we tap into that."
It's still somewhat of a mystery as to what Ault is doing. He is known, of course, for his work with the pistol offense. But Chiefs OC Doug Pederson indicated the other day that that sort of stuff will not be a "staple" of the offense.
Childress will remain with the team even after camp breaks. He's living in Kansas City, according to Reid. Ault will not be with the team after camp breaks but still "available to us" as a consultant, Reid said.
