Updating KC Chiefs position battles 3 days into training camp

John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs don't have a lot of major position battles but they have a number of secondary battles such as inside linebacker and left guard. Read on for an update on the Chiefs position battles through the first three days of practice.

Inside linebacker

Akeem Jordan is working with the first team. Nico Johnson is on the second team. I haven't seen any major issues with Jordan there. Wouldn't surprise me at this point if he's your Week 1 starter.

Left guard

Jeff Allen was working with the ones before his injury. Geoff Schwartz has replaced him.

The length of Allen's injury could come into play here.

No. 2 cornerback

Sean Smith has emerged early as the No. 2 corner. The Chiefs have been in plenty of defensive formations with all three cornerbacks -- Smith, Brandon Flowers and Dunta Robinson -- on the field. It's not like Dunta's standing off to the side. He's involved as well.

No. 2 receiver

Jon Baldwin has consistently been the No. 2 receiver. Donnie Avery has consistently been working with the second team. When Dwayne Bowe was out.

Tight end

We're guessing Anthony Fasano is the first team but you really couldn't tell that with the reps. The tight ends are all seeing first team reps. This is up in the air.

No. 3 quarterback

Tyler Bray and Ricky Stanzi are splitting reps. Bray has been going ahead of Stanzi.

Safety

This is tough to tell, to be honest. Kendrick Lewis has been in there often but the Chiefs have had a lot of formations with more than just four defensive backs. Husain Abdullah is back there as well.

No. 2 running back

Knile Davis is the leader here early. He's had his issues -- drops, mainly -- but he has been running after Jamaal Charles.
