Free agent Desmond Bishop visiting Kansas City Chiefs after Minnesota Vikings

Doug Pensinger

The Kansas City Chiefs will have a free agent visitor this week -- linebacker Desmond Bishop, who was cut by the Green Bay Packers earlier this week.

After the Green Bay Packers cut linebacker Desmond Bishop this week, many people connected him to the Kansas City Chiefs due to GM John Dorsey's ties to Green Bay. For a day, those were just rumors. But now they're they're starting to get a little more real. Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Bishop will visit the Chiefs.

His first visit was to the Packers NFC North rival, the Minnesota Vikings. The next stop -- if he doesn't sign in Minnesota -- is to Kansas City where he'll visit the Chiefs.

This is VERY interesting moves. Andy Reid historically hasn't spent big money on linebackers but Dorsey is familiar with Bishop and it's June, a time when you rarely get an opportunity to upgrade your defense. The Chiefs are clearly interested in that opportunity.

Also keep this in mind: It's possible the Chiefs are being used as leverage. Bishop's camp can look at the Vikings and say they have another visit coming up so if they want him, make him an offer he can't refuse.

Bishop was the Packers sixth round pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. He could step in and compete for playing time at inside linebacker, a position that has rookie Nico Johnson and veteran Akeem Jordan (former Eagle) competing at the moment. That inside linebacker spot is one of the few unsettled positions on the Chiefs defense, which is why this visit is so intriguing.
