So there's this:
Reid stated that Moeaki likely wont be back until training camp.— Nick Jacobs (@Jacobs71) May 23, 2013
Reid also says Tony Moeaki is likely out until training camp. No real surprise. Hasn't done anything all offseason.— Lance Veeser (@lanceveeser) May 23, 2013
Reid hopes Moeaki is ready for training camp #chiefs— Bob Fescoe (@bobfescoe) May 23, 2013
The Chiefs offseason program ends on June 6 so it's also accurate to say that Moeaki is out for at least another two weeks. The injury to Moeaki is reportedly a knee scope over the offseason. It's not clear when, exactly, that happened. It was first reported in mid-March though it happened sometime after the season.
There are a lot of "likely" and "hopes" used here, which is concerning because of Moeaki's injury history. That he hasn't participated in any of the Chiefs offseason activities, with a new head coach and a new offense coming in, is also concerning. Moeaki is entering the final year of his contract -- due over $1.3 million -- so there's not a huge incentive to cut him before the season. The Chiefs also signed Anthony Fasano to a four-year deal and drafted Travis Kelce in the third round.
Given all that, it's hard to see Moeaki have a sizable impact on the Chiefs 2013 season, at least early on. I'd love to be wrong but the moves the Chiefs have made this offseason indicate otherwise.
