So recently Jeff Gordon and company tried to show us all how dumb they think we are. They aired a commercial in which Jeff Gordon wears a disguise and supposedly "pranks" an unsuspecting car salesman and scares the bejesus out of the poor unsuspecting car salesman on a test drive. Of course this test drive was done on a closed course (how convenient) and the guy he supposedly pranked just happens to work for Disney at the Nascar experience. Now in case you were sniffing glue and thought this prank was real, think again. It was all staged and set up to sell product.
So what does that have to do with Geno Smith? Recently Jon Gruden invited Geno Smith to be a guest on his QB camp show. To be honest I did not see it but I intend to catch it tomorrow when it re-airs. Also, I should tell everyone that I have no hard opinion on Geno Smith and whether or not he will be a successful QB in the NFL, I simply do not know. I did tune in and watch Geno play two games last season just because of all the chatter surrounding him. Being as we needed a QB really badly and I knew we would be drafting really high in the draft, my curiosity was peaked. Coincidentally, he played pretty average in both games so I was not impressed. However, I didn't let two games form my opinion of this kid for me because he came so highly touted and his numbers were eye popping. So I chalked it up to him just having a couple of bad games, no less, no more.
But since the Gruden QB camp show aired it seems everyone is high on Geno again. I looked it up on the internet to see what the chatter was following the show and pretty much everyone was saying he seemed so smart and poised and that he had successfully silenced his critics. Now whether or not he did and whether or not he is going to be amazing or he is going to be a career back up QB is irrelevant to me, what is relevant is that people keep a proper perspective on these type shows.
Pretty much everything you and I will ever see on TV is scripted to some degree and the Gruden show is no exception people. I have watched just about every segment of Gruden interviewing players on his shows and one thing stands out; Gruden never says anything bad about anyone he has on his show, ever. But that is not surprising because if he did, he wouldn't have a show for very much longer. If he threw totally impromptu questions and play diagrams at these players and they failed miserably on national television, no player would ever go on his show again because their agents would not allow it. I would be shocked if the NFL network doesn't give a courtesy heads up to these players and their agents as to what type of questions will be asked and what type of play diagrams will be dissected on the show.
Gruden always compliments every single player on his show. He has never said anything negative about a player on his show and he never will, it would be bad for business. These players come on his show to get helped out and to look good and thats the only reason they do it. Its a business decision plain and simple so don't get caught up into debating Geno Smith or any players abilities based on a TV show that receives commercial sponsorship.
I would love some honest feedback from you guys on Geno Smith because quite frankly I'm not sold on the guy. I can't find one credible source from any scout, evaluator or TV commentator anywhere that thinks Geno is worth a top ten pick, not one; and that worries me. Yes, I know that scouts miss from time to time, that is to be expected. But when there is a 100% consensus on a player across the board, that has to mean something. This isn't like one or two guys saying these things about Geno or I could dismiss it as just the normal back and forth we are fed every season. From Cam Newton to Eric Berry, there were mixed reviews, but not so with Geno Smith.
At this point I am so confused that I don't want him with our first pick simply because I am uncomfortable with him now. However, I am open to listening to what anyone has to say as long as you can back it up with something more than an opinion. Thank you and as always Go Chiefs!!
