Blast From the Past: 1997 Draft

This is a rare year for the NFL draft. Quarterback is usually the overall consensus at the number one slot, but there is no quarterback this year that is worthy of the top pick (or maybe even a first round pick).

The Kansas City Chiefs have that top pick, but they already traded for former 49er quarterback Alex Smith. It is projected that the Chiefs will take Offensive Tackle Luke Joeckel at one. The last time a tackle was taken number one was 2008 by Miami (which, it should be noted that they are in the tackle hunt again). However, Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco were highly touted quarterbacks that year.

Orlando Pace was taken one overall in 1997 and that quarterback class seems very similar to this one. The only quarterback taken in the first round in 1997 was Jim Drukenmiller with the 26th pick by San Francisco. Who? Jake Plummer was taken by Arizona in the second round, but that was the last one taken until the fourth round.

Every year seems to have that can’t-miss-pick quarterback, even in 2008 with Ryan. 1997 and 2013 are the only exceptions. The only quarterback from 1997 that actually showed some promise was Plummer and he was far from great. So, you have to wonder if 2013 may carry the same results.

If Jake Plummer is the ceiling, then maybe John Dorsey knows what he’s doing after all.
