Chiefs GM explains process of signing Dwayne Bowe and tagging Branden Albert

John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports

Kansas City Chiefs GM John Dorsey spoke with the team's website about Dwayne Bowe and Branden Albert decisions this week. Bowe is sticking around on a five-year deal and Albert is sticking around on the franchise tag.

John Dorsey briefly explained the process of signing Dustin Colquitt and Dwayne Bowe on Monday and then coming to the conclusion to franchise tag Branden Albert.

"We as a group got together about 6:00 a.m. and kind of began the process and tried to begin to put some crystallization to the process," said Dorsey, who loves the word "process", apparently. "As we went along the process, the first thing we did was get the punter out of the way."

By "out of the way" he means making Dustin Colquitt the highest paid punter in the NFL.

"Once we got the punter out of the way we began to address the wide receiver. We had continuous negotiations and conversations with his representatives. At that time it was very close to the deadline of the franchise tag. What we did was we came to an agreement, we got a deal done then we were able to tag Branden Albert with the franchise tag."

So it really did come down to the last few minutes. The franchise tag deadline was at 3:00 p.m. on Monday and at about 3:15 p.m. was when we heard news on Colquitt, Bowe and then Albert.

Speaking of Albert, Dorsey continued talking about the Chiefs left tackle.

"When you take a broad overview of the whole process of free agency, the franchise tags and what was best for this organization ... the way we came about, 1, 2 and 3 to the conclusion, we thought it best at the end of the day if we could franchise tag Branden Albert."

This looks like a minor quote that says nothing. But I wonder if it says something more. When Dorsey mentions the "broad overview" of free agency, I wondered if he was talking about the unusual amount of talent at left tackle that will be hitting the open market on March 12. I also wondered if they're hoping that the free agent left tackle market will help set the market for Albert. What will the amount of tackles on the market (supply) do to the price paid for them (demand)? I don't know the answer to that (I never took econ!) but I find the Chiefs options with Albert very interesting. They could keep him all year, trade him or rescind the tag and sign someone else ... and I wouldn't be all that surprised by any of them.

See video of the interview here. Here are a few other quotes from Dorsey's interview:

-"I think we're better off today than we were yesterday."

-"Anytime you have a player of the caliber of Dwayne Bowe you're to try to do everything possibly that you can."

-"[Bowe] said, 'Yes Mr. Dorsey, I accept this challenge.'"
