Trading the #1 overall pick and trading back in the first round seems to be a trending topic lately. Of course only the people at 1 Arrowhead Drive know what type of offers (if any) they have had or will have for the number one overall pick in the 213 NFL draft. It is incredible easy to say "The Chiefs should trade down in the 1st round" but what type of compensation would it take for you to want to make that trade? I am guessing you wouldn't just trade down a few spots for a bag of footballs, though I might wanna trade down if another team would just take Matt Cassel. Wocka Wocka Wocka(ducks tomatoes). But seriously:
What kind of offer would it take to make you want to trade the #1 overall pick?
The question is more complicated than it appears on the surface because we don't know how far we would have to trade down or what picks the hypothetical team that we might be trading with would have. After that you have to consider the value of conditional and future draft picks. If you wanna make it more difficult you can add in a current NFL player or two into the trade scenario. Add it all together and we have so many variables that it is difficult to come up with a relative value for fair compensation of the #1 overall pick.
So if we want to have a meaningful conversation about trading the #1 overall pick then we have to put context into it by adding a hypothetical scenario. For instance you could have a scenario something like:
- The Arizona Cardinals need an OT and want to trade up
- The Cardinals have picks #7 #38 #69 #100 #133 in the first five rounds to offer
- The Players on the Cardinals teams and Chiefs are on the table
- Future and conditional picks are on the table
Given these parameters what would you want?
I personally would be open to many scenarios because I think the Chiefs best option now that Bowe is signed and Albert is tagged is to trade down for value. Given the options above, I would want the #7 and #38 pick to trade back if that was the only compensation. If we got the #7 and the Cardinals 2014 1st round pick I would be happy too. I can imagine several scenarios I could find favorable for the Chiefs given this one scenario.
Another option that no one is mentioning is the Chiefs can trade for a second first round pick. I am not a big fan of this option because I feel the value of this draft is in the depth of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th round. I also feel like we would have to give away a lot to get another pick in the first this year.
So what I really want to know is, realistically, what type of trade scenarios and offers (with any team) would you be interested in?
