Updated Chiefs Roster: Post-FA Edition

Jamie Squire

From the FanPosts -Joel

Ladies, Gents, Men, Women, and H2E...

Before the Free Agency Frenzy, I posted a Depth Chart with the contracts visually depicted by year. The idea was to get a feel for the future of the Chief's roster in order to anticipate any holes that may not be apparent for 2013, but could affect signing decisions. With Free Agency largely finished, I have updated this depth chart in anticipation of the draft. I have added some new information, so before I post the chart I'll explain a few of the column headers so folks can see what's going on:

  • Obviously, the first two columns are the POSITION and PLAYER name. I have tried to anticipate the depth chart and placed the players in order at their positions (I welcome debate about my ordering choices). Also, I put names in bold that I think are near-locks to make the final roster. Non-bold names are possible cuts or camp fodder. Last - I kept a couple of our UFA and RFA players on the list that I thought might have a slight chance of still getting signed, namely: Rucker and Brock, just because we're thin at TE; Hochstein, who's a long-shot with the Schwartz signing; Shaun Smith on the D-Line; and McCarthy, Elam, and Daniels in the secondary.
  • DR is the round the player was originally drafted in. At the bottom of the names you'll see average draft information for the defense as a whole, and the average of just the starters (as I have predicted them). To calculate this average, I counted "undrafted" players as a round "8" pick. Also, the average info displayed includes the information for our unsigned FAs, so they are not 100% accurate.
  • The ? column has an asterisk if the player was drafted by the Chiefs. This includes UDFAs that were signed first by the Chiefs. At the bottom I have counted up our total draft picks for the offense and defense.
  • AGE again has the average information for the total offense/defense, and then just for the starters. This average number is also skewed by the inclusion of our unsigned FAs, like Elam, Hochstein, and Daniels, who would be some of the oldest players on the roster. Our real numbers will probably be lower.
  • CONTRACT lists the overall contract figure for any big contracts (greater than $5 million). This is not the cap hit, and much of that money may have already been paid to the player, but it gives you a general idea of where we have put our big money.
  • YEARS: In the year columns I have listed the total CAP HIT for each player in each year (not their salary). The dark colored cells obviously represent the years the player's contract extends through. The light shaded cell at the end of each row lists whether they will be a UFA, RFA, or ERFA at the end of their contract (and potential franchise tag years). The total salary cap numbers are at the bottom.

This data was compiled from a variety of sources, but the salary cap information is taken directly from Spotrac.com.

So without further ado, here is our current Talent Roster: With recent addition Kilgore and fixes from the comments - H/T Ben Martin

What do I notice from this roster that could play into this year's draft? First, our FA period has addressed many of the needs that I listed in my first post: TE, WR2 past 2013, and O-Line/D-Line depth. What's still missing for 2013?

  1. Linebackers. Our starters right now would be Hali, Johnson, Houston, and Greenwood/Edgar Jones - with Studebaker as our only other back up. We must shore this up for the 2013 season. Expect LB in the draft to address our immediate needs.
  2. Tight End. We have Moeaki and Fasano, but two TEs is a bit light for an NFL roster and definitely light going into camp. Anticipate a TE somewhere in the draft.

What about drafting for the future? A couple of things jump out at us. If the 2014 season started right now, we would have 5 WRs, 1 TE, 4 QBs, and 6 linemen on the offense. That's not bad carryover from year-to-year. On defense, we would have 8 returning players in the secondary, our 4 starting LBs, but only 4 defensive linemen! And those four would be: DeVito, Bailey, Poe, and Powe! This leads me to think that:

  1. We will draft be drafting for the defensive line. Maybe not for 2013, but for the future. This could influence that number one pick (that a few people discuss here from time to time). I know we are a bit weary of D-Line with our first pick, but it's a possibility.
  2. The future of the O-Line is probably our second largest "future" issue. Especially at guard, where we lose everyone except Allen next year.

Last, what can this picture tell us about re-signings that might be coming down the pipe? What I look for here are "cliff edges" at a particular roster spot. We see pretty good stagger at most of our roster positions, meaning that we aren't rolling over everyone in the same year. I can imagine this is a feature that GMs try to intentionally build into a roster. But we do see a couple areas of concern:

  1. QB. After 2014, every QB contract expires except Chase. This could influence our decision to get Alex signed to a long-term extension (or maybe we fill that hole long term with a small-handed razorback?)
  2. LB. As it stands now, we lose DJ, Hali, and Greenwood all at the end of 2015. Justin Houston is signed through 2014. What this says to me (and yes, I did have this in my last FanPost also) is that tagging Houston for in 2015 would be a very risky proposition, setting up a chance to lose everyone simultaneously the next year. Yes - Hali and DJ will be on the other side of 30 by then, so we may not re-sign them, but we would still have to replace them. That's a lot of LB work to do in a single off-season. My recommendation: get Houston signed to a long term deal before the 2013 season is done. Avoid the holdout when his agent sees how much we need him later.

That's all I've got. Comments and criticisms are welcomed, especially about the depth seeding. I'll try to update this after the draft / draft-signings if it is a tool that people find useful. Let me know in the comments. Cheers.
