Another way to look at Depth Chart / Needs

Hey fellow APers,

We have a couple of recent posts about the Chiefs' off-season needs. Joel posted the teams 8 biggest needs back on March 6th, and Steve_Chiefs recently ran down our depth chart for 2013. I thought I would take a slightly different look at our needs, taking into account the way a GM might view long-term team health and contracts. I wanted to see not just how our needs for this year appear, but what might be coming down the road. Such a perspective could provide an alternate view of free agency and the draft. Not drafting for now, but for the future.

For example, we might think we have our starting LBs all sewn up on the Chiefs' roster (after all, we have three ProBowl LBs). If we look at contract expiration, however, we see that we will lose Hali, Johnson, and Greenwood all in the same year. While I realize Greenwood is nowhere near the talent level of Tambi and DJ, he is currently our only signed ILB next to DJ. The point is more that we stand to lose a lot of talent, at one position, all at the same time. I don't know how much that factors into a GM's decsion making, but I thought I'd chart it out to see how it looks.

The following are the color coded depth charts laid out by position. The lighter colored year is a potential "franchise" year that we could squeeze out of an player, If we so choose. I included blank positions for any Chiefs UFA or RFAs that haven't been resigned yet. I also put in the total values (not cap hits) of our highest paid players (anyone signed for greater than $5 million) so we can see if there are any over-paid position groups. I have reposted the tables for two reasons. First, I have added the "by year" salary numbers. Second, I had somehow combined Donald Stephenson's name into 'Donaldson' in my first table. Weird. What can we take away from these charts?

(Note: All dates and salary numbers taken from Spotrac.)

The first glaring hole is at TE. We have only ONE signed TE on the roster, and Moeaki is only locked up for one more year. Joel had TE as our #8 priority, but this tells me that, regardless of our depth or "starter quality" needs at other position, TE must be addressed before those other issues. For example, at RB. Everyone wants a quality #2 change-of-pace back for JC, but from this depth chart, TE appears as a much larger need.

Second thing of note, our O-line depth (both in bodies for 2013, and stretched over time) does not look too grim. Again, we can argue the quality of those players all day, but I am trying to look at this specifically from the point of view of contracts and future "holes" that will appear..

The last big point I took away from this chart is WR. Other than Bowe, Wylie, and Baldwin, we have no WR on our roster signed past next season. Thus, I would expect some more moves at WR either this offseason or during the 2013 season.

Concern #1, where the heck are our LBs?!? Yes, we have three ProBowl linebackers on the Chiefs... and Greenwood. With only one year left on Studie's contract, depth at LB is a screaming hole on the roster. Not the depth question like, "Gee... if so-and-so goes down, the guy behind is barely serviceable," but the depth problem of "Gee... if we lost a LB, there is NOBODY AT ALL TO PLAY!"

As I noted before, we also have a lot of LB contracts expiring in 2015. The danger there is: if we tag Houston after he plays his final year, we will be hurting to retain guys the year after that. If I'm Dorsey, I start moving on Houston's contract sooner rather than later. The man plays like a first round pick, he'll want to get paid like one.

Second point, while everyone is still screaming for a #2 CB and a new SS/FS, our depth in the secondary is actually miles ahead of our LB and defensive line corps, especially if we resign Dorsey. While CB may very well be one of our biggest needs in terms of importance, it certainly isn't in terms of bodies and contracts.

Final point, we have a lot more of our "big money" locked away on defense than on offense. I'm not saying this will affect signings in any particular way, it's just something to note.

SPECIAL TEAMS

As for special teams, we just need a long snapper. I would have to imagine that Gafford gets resigned at some point.

TEAM NEEDS

This would make my list of needs:

#1 - ILB and LB depth. We are missing a starter and any depth at all. (Not just "quality depth")

#2 - TE. We have one. Yes... one. We need more than one. Because one is just, well.... one.

#3 - WR long term contracts. I'm not saying it's someone currently on our roster, but before next year, the Chiefs will need to lock somebody up.

#4 - D-Line depth. Yep, it's a need, but not nearly as large as the first three.

#5 - O-Line depth. See above.

So from a purely "bodies and contracts" perspective, our needs look slightly different then those that we have been discussing most often. Granted, this is not the only perspective, or even the right perspective, to take, but I thought it worth exploring. (Thus, any comments that say, "Yeah, sure, but RB is more important than..." are kind of missing the point.) All else being equal, LB, TE, and WR are our biggest (future) roster holes.
