That is basically how I feel Clark Hunt is taunting us now. SOC threw down a gauntlet during the season calling for a radical shakeup of the plan to get the Chiefs back to the pinnacle of the NFL. There was much rejoicing in Chiefs kingdom when it looked that Clark heard the fans and had decided to take that bold step. There was buzz in the fan base. Would we sign Kelly as the new Head Coach? Would be take the offense in a entirely new direction and more importantly would we finally get that dream Top Pick QB.
Well Clark has given us that answer and it is a resounding no. He went with a proven commodity at coaching with Andy Reid. He and Andy hand picked a GM that both were comfortable with who also came from a proven program (Green Bay) Now it appears that they have gone with what they judge is the best proven commodity at QB available in the off season and that is Alex Smith.
I understand the impulses that lead to this. This not a Madden game. There is literally millions of dollars riding on these decisions and to expect Clark, Andy, and John to slide all those chips over to 12 on black was more than we could expect them to do. That amount of money pressure really demands prudence. That Clark and his recent hires have done that should surprise no one.
As to what I think the next move will be depends on Monday. I just don't see Bowe walking. That they invested that much in A. Smith really demands that we retain Bowe. So if we can't sign him then we tag him. If that happens I think we will say good bye to Big Albert. That he goes would be a horrible thing but we could survive. If we sign Bowe then if Albert becomes the tagged player if he can't be signed. If we can keep both Albert and Bowe then I see us pushing Jackson really hard on restructuring his contract. If he can't be restructured then it will be bye bye Jackson and we go DE in the draft with the 1st pick.
As to the 1st pick itself. I know that Dorsey and Reid would love to trade back and get that second round pick back in some form or another. I just wonder if there is a dance partner out there that has someone on their wish list willing to trade 1st rounders and throw in a second to get their man. I just don't see anyone that desperate.
So I am not surprised about how this off season has played out so far. There will be plenty of time to see if the prudent course was enough to get the results Clark wants. I just hope he gets what he wants.
