With all the talk about the Chiefs' QB situation, and if draft prospect X is "worth" draft pick Y and this that or the other, I thought it would be a refreshing change of pace to look at one of the Chiefs' other needs: the inside linebacker position.

The Chiefs' line backing corps was the best unit on the team last season, will likely be the best unit again this year, and was one of the best units in all of football. It features two bona fide Pro-Bowlers in Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali, and a rising star in Justin Houston. So it seems odd on the surface to say LB is a position of need for the Chiefs this year. However, after a season-ending injury to Brandon Siler two off seasons ago and the unspeakable tragedy this season, the Chiefs are left thin at the position. Siler is a nice player, but he isn't going to the Pro Bowl anytime soon.

However, the Chiefs can fix their "problem" at ILB in two easy steps:

1. Go out and sign Bart Scott. Yes, Scott is old and the J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets had a bad season last year. But he would be a great fit for the Chiefs because he played for Bob Sutton when Sutton was the defensive coordinator for NY/B. A one or two year deal for the 33 year old linebacker would be appropriate. He would provide the Chiefs a veteran leader, toughness, and someone who knows Sutton's system and could step in and play right away. He will likely come a reasonable price, and the Chiefs could do much worse for two years.

2. Draft Georgia ILB Alec Ogletree in the 2nd or 3rd round. Before anyone jumps in with "character concerns" comments (suspended the first four games of this last season, recently arrested on suspected DUI), hear me out. The Georgia LB product is a first-round, possibly top-10, talent who is dropping on draft boards due solely to his off-field issues. Sound familiar? The last time the Chiefs drafted a player with that exact description it worked out pretty well.

Ideally, the Chiefs will trade down from number one overall to gain an additional pick in the second and/or third round (depending on how far they trade back). The Chiefs should then take him using one of their second or third round picks (depending on how far he falls). He would come to a team loaded with veteran leadership and be able to learn the position behind two Pro Bowlers at the position (Scott made the Pro Bowl in 2006). It would allow Ogletree and Siler to be backups this year, and he could see a decent amount of time in sub-packages.

The Chiefs have many needs this off season, but I think this is an ideal way to fill one of those needs both in the short term and for the future.
