If I were the Chiefs GM I would definatley be looking to go potential over a finished product. The Chiefs, while more talented than their abysmal record indicates still need an influx of young talent. If the right pieces are put into place there is no doubt in my mind the chiefs will be on track again to be one of the up and coming afc super bowl contenders. I like how pioli drafted when todd haley was head coach he went for flash and speed, which I think this team needs more of. Honestly I think we are fine on the trenches on both sides of the ball. I believe our dline will benefit greatly from the 1gap 3-4 defense Sutton should be implementing. So my main strategy is to build from the outside in. In other terms, im looking for a draft of high boom or bust game changers. Mainly I will be looking at the skill positions QB, WR, CB, S
GENO SMITH QB WEST VIRGINIA
I don't understand why everyone has us taking Luke Joeckel? I mean seriously is this a joke? Even If Branden ALbert left there is no way in hell I would be spending the number one overall pick on a Left Tackle. Donald Stepenson would be perfectly fine filling in at left tackle. Scott Pioli, even though he was a bad gm, left the Chiefs with a very talented o-line. Yes, left tackle's are a very important position in football, but in today's nfl the importance of QB is ten fold. Now onto Geno Smith. Kiper, even though he knows alot more about scouting than I do confuses me in the fact I dont get what he doesn't see in Geno Smith. I think Geno Smith's potential is off the charts, no im not saying he is the second coming of montana. and no not because of his physical ability but his hunger for knowledge of the game. He is a complete football nerd like Manning or Brady, now obviously you have to have some skill to make it work but geno smith has that. I have seen so many quotes, "Oh well, there is a chance he busts he isnt a sure thing" "he isn't a competitor he mopes, didnt you see the tech game?" "Geno smith is a product of his system" "He can't go through his progressions" He gets flustered in the pocket" yada yada. First of all quite being morons (only a few of you who dont think geno is the best pick, or that we shouldn't take a quarterback for that matter), no quarterback is a sure thing, but the successful franchises are the ones that are risk takers and that are willing to take a chance on upside. Watch some tape to all of you who are against Geno. Alot of people have posted his highlights. He is completely cool and calm in the pocket, and has the ability to extend plays and is not b ad at throwing on the run actually. He can go through progressions I have seen it he just isnt asked to do much of it in Holgerson's system. And the point that he moped at the tech game, ill be honest this does concern me a tad bit. But who hasn't had a bad day? Geno was put in a horrible position with a shitty o-line and a terrible defense. Honestly Geno, in my opinion, has the upside to be an elite quarterback if he puts it all together and has the "it" factor that we dont really know a qb possesses until the nfl. He reminds me of a mix between ben roethlisberger and aaron rodgers that would be his ceiling of course but he atleast has that potential, which I cant say the same thing about wilson, barkley, or glennon honestly. and he fits reid's west coast offense exceptionally well. I could go on and on, and I know I dont have alot of evidence to back up my claims but its there for you on the internet go watch some tape.
1. XAVIER RHODES CB FLORIDA STATE
I have no doubt in my mind Rhodes will be gone by the second but for some extremely odd reason he isn't this a no brainer. Arenas was not bad at the 2 slot and actually was pleasant surprise, but still #2 CB is a pressing need. Rhodes is a big corner, like Carr, but is more physical at the line of scrimmage. He doesn't have elite speed but he excles at man coverage and pressing. Which will be important in Sutton's scheme im assuming. He could even become an upgrade to Carr possibly. If Rhodes pans out he could put this D over the top IMO.
2. TAVON AUSTIN WR WEST VIRGINIA
Tavon Austin reminds me alot of Desean Jackson and maybe Reid will see that too. As you all know he was Geno SMith's teammate so Geno will like that. Plus he will bring a new dynamic to chiefs offense that I don't think ive ever seen, a reciever who can truly take the top of off a defense. Suddenly wide reciever could turn into a strength, especially if Baldwin and McCluster turn it around with the new regime and we resign Bowe, and Breaston revives. You can never have too many weapons. They could even put him in the backfield catching balls.
3. MANTI TE'O ILB NOTRE DAME
Remember when people were think here on AP taking him as the number 1 overall pick. He would be an absolute steal here, because he was put in a bad situation. But I still don't see a way he will be here im hoping he will though.
4. DESMOND TRUFANT CB WASHINGTON
While Trufant isn't as physical as Rhodes, he's still big 6'0'', and is faster. He has a natural ability be able to play man to man.
5. QUINTON PATTON WR LOUSIANA TECH
Patton isn't that fast nor is he that big. But he is a great route runner and has good hands, really impressed at the senior bowl. Something tells me this kid has a really bright future.
6. JORDAN POYER CB OREGON STATE
Poyer is about the same size as Trufant but is more physcial and can press better with less speed. Really a medium between Rhodes and Trufant.
7. MARGUS HUNT DE SMU
Don't be mad by this, I know tired of defensive lineman taken high only to bust. But to me Margus Hunt seems like a guy that could make this dline get mean, lets face it our dline was soft last year and has been for a loooong time. He does need to add bulk to his frame so he is project for a 3-4 DE, however Im taking a guy here that can make an impact. However if the strength & conditioning coach can promise to put 20 pounds of mass on him by season time I would, in fact, take him.
8. MATT ELAM S FLORIDA
This kid is all over the place everytime I watch Florida. He could be something special, I doubt he is here in the 2nd, however. But this would give the chance for Berry to move to his natural position at FS.
9. KEVIN MINTER ILB LSU
Big and physcial. HE is an LSU product and we know so much about them....
10. ZACH ERTZ TE STANFORD
Honestly I think out TEs are fine, but Ertz I thin k has a bright future in the nfl. The only thing Reid typically only uses one TE so that leaves Boss and Moeaki out.
1. BACCARI RAMBO S GEORGIA
Physical freak, is rangy like a FS but is a big thumper like a SS. Very aggressive and could give this defense a certain type of swagger. This would be a big steal here I think.
1. STEDMAN BAILEY WR WEST VIRGINIA
He has been Geno's receiving target since high school. He is pretty fast, has excellent hands, is a great route runner. He just isn't as explosive as Tavon Austin.
2. JORDAN REED TE FLORIDA
He is extremely raw, but he is a superb pass catching tight end who is a bit undersized and isn't much of a blocker. He is extremely fast too and is really eerily similair to Aaron Hernandez, this kid is huge boom or bust.
3. MARQUISE GOODWIN WR TEXAS
He is fast and can stretch the field. Really impressed at the senior bowl.
4. ARTHUR BROWN ILB KANSAS STATE
He is undersized, and needs to put on at least 10 pounds. But he is fast and knows how to tackle. Even Ray Lewis was "undersized" coming out.
5. ROBERT ALFORD CB SOUTHEASTERN LOUSIANA
Small school product, has big upside though. Extremely fast, and is a great kick returner too. 5'10'' so he can play on the outside.
6. TERRANCE WILLIAMS WR BAYLOR
Definatley won't be here, but there is a chance. Big fast reciever that is boom or bust also.
1. ZAVIER GOODEN LB MISSOURI
This kid could possibly be the steal of the draft honestly and will probably be here come round 4. He needs to add bulk to play ILB, but this kid ran a 4.4. He is a project but the ceiling for this kid is insanely high. He has instictual problems but has so much speed that he can mask that. Projects better as a 4-3 OLB, but he could play ILB only if he puts on 10 pounds of muscle mass which wouldnt be much to ask come next season. Reminds me of Bobby Wagner. I don't know how good he is against the run and he is definatley more of a wilb, which makes a problem with Derrick Johnson. However, I think the upside is too much to resist.
2. EJ MANUEL QB FLORIDA STATE
He is obviously a project. But he is big, fast and has a huge arm. Most likely won't be here this late, but if he is there i'd grab him. He would sit on the bench as the back-up and learn from Nfl coaches to become a better pure passer. He could become trade bait down the line.
3. TYRANN MATHIEU CB LSU
I don't know exactly where the Honey Badger would fit on the defense we would already have a nickel corner, he is too undersized to play safety. However, I could expect an NFL defensive coordinator to have the knwoledge to be able to use him successfully. I think he would give the chiefs secondary an edge and some swagger per say.
4. SEAN PORTER OLB/DE TEXAS A&M
It seems to me A&M always produces good pass rushers. Porter I think could be really good.
5.. BRANDON JENKINS DE/OLB FLORIDA STATE
We don't have much depth behind Hali and Houston. Jenkins is a freak and knows how to get to the quarterback, very raw.
6. JELANI JENKINS DE/OLB FLORIDA
7. JON BOSTIC ILB FLORIDA
Is a big run thumper type of guy perfect fit for slb.
8. WILLIAM GHOLSTON DT/DE MICHIGAN STATE
Has first round athleticism and skill set, but takes far too many plays off
9. MONTEE BALL HB WISCONSIN
Big physcial runner. Reid doesn't really use two backs though and I don't know how good of a pass catcher he is.
Well my dream scenario Five round mock would look like this even though there is a 1% chance of happening.
What is the most realistic....
That is all for now. Thoughts?
