Andy Reid stated all week about not holding the game plan back. Saying, by now everyone has film on what we like to do. I guess he was just fooling everyone, the offense went back to being conservative and throwing nothing but underneath routes. We hardly took shots down the field even though their safeties were playing aggressive. This offense looked exactly like the way it looked the first 9 games. Sutton came out trying to play a lot of zones. This year, even when we had the # 1 defense, we have not been a good zone defense. I understand people here at AP has called for a change in our defense, but that is not the way our defense is built.
Even though the coaches called this game differently then they have had in the past four weeks. The players still did not step up and play. There were plays to be made, a few dropped interceptions, missed tackles, dropped passes, fumbles and interceptions. The loss to me still falls on the coaches shoulders. They came out with the game plan to play different and it got the team in a hole. When they finally did try to get back to the way we have been playing the game it was to late.
I am hoping that this game was an aberration! I feel like we were the better team, but with how this game was called and how the chiefs played during the game it didn't show. I mean most of us know that there was an outside shot that the Chiefs could have gotten the # 1 seed, but what person in their right mind really thought the broncos would lose either of their last 2 games?? Now I will not defend the play of the Chiefs, but when your coaching staffs are holding things back, it might effect the way the players play. Maybe subconsciously they were holding back their play. Its the only explanation that I can come up with of why this team had not one damn player stepping up to make plays.
The thing is, the coaches should have thought more about the importance of this game. It was our last home game, (Fan appreciation day) and even though we played Denver tough and have not been dominated at all this year. We have not beaten a team with a winning record aside from the Vick led Eagles. We needed to make a great showing. The players needed the confidence that they could play big against great teams. This was not the week to try new things and play the game differently just cause we might play the colts again. (That is still in question since we didn't win against the colts)
I will think now that the chiefs will sit our starters next week. I would hope that they start game planning for the colts tomorrow. Get back to playing the way they have been playing the last 4 weeks, aggressive on offense and man to man on defense. Houston should be back for that game and I will look forward to the defense becoming the strong unit they were the first nine weeks. Even a rusty Houston will be better then the way zombo has been playing. I still think we have a lot to look forward to! We will be the healthiest team in the playoffs with Albert and Houston coming back and we have played better on the road! This season is not over for this chiefs and I still have the confidence in this team. I hope that I am right about the way I felt this game was called and played. Anyways this is my take after I calmed down. (I was saying that the chiefs didn't deserve to be in the playoffs in the game day thread) How did you all feel about the way this game went down??
Matt, the fan who still believes we get over the hump of no playoff wins in the last 20 yrs!
