I did something last evening that I haven't done all year......didn't listen to any post game sports radio or comb sites for commentary and analysis. That is because, although we came up short, this franchise is now relevant in the division, the conference and the league. How long has it been that anyone could make such a statement?
I really don't need to hear or read about all the second guessing about play calling, defensive game plans, etc. We know that the Chiefs don't have the pieces in place in the receiving corps. Are the drops all that much a surprise? Avery and Bowe have a history of it. And, poor free safety play is really nothing new this year. In fact, one could make the case that the secondary play had not been all that stellar for a number of years. Throw in a seventh round rookie who has one year of college play at corner and, well, you saw the results
I'd like to mention three performances of note, as I see it anyway. One negative, two positive. Lets get the nasty stuff out of the way first.
Sean Smith is really getting on my nerves.
Personally, I love aggressive, hard hitting defensive football. Two things will get my blood boiling though: stupid penalties and crappy tackling That interference penalty in the fourth quarter was just plan stupid. And he had that look of amazement when it was called. That pissed me off more.
Someone needs to sit that man down and tell him what expectations are when you're about to tackle an opponent headed for the goal line. That is you wrap your arms around the sucker and knock him to the ground. None of this panty waist cut the legs crap. I'd make him do it in practice until he gets his mind right. Then, I make him do it some more just for good measure.
Jamall goes over the top.
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that the first time 25 has leapt over the heap for a TD? I don't recall him ever doing it before and I loved it. Never did understand why, when close to the goal line, he hasn't dome more if it. That should be a money play.
The Chiefs have a quarterback.
Yes, that was a terrible pick in the end-zone. My wife and daughter had to calm me down. But, the son of a gun came right back firing.....and hitting. I love that about this guy. You can't teach temperament and Alex has the ideal one for a QB. The man was really making some outstanding throws yesterday and his feet......whoa Nellie...dude can peel off some yards on the turf. If this sound like I'm gushing, well I am. Yes, even when he doesn't make the throw to tie it up. He went down swinging and I'll take it.
Put it another way, If Eric Decker was on the Chiefs up against Cooper for the opposition, Smith would have tossed him the 4 TD's as well. That's the way I see it anyway.
So, yes, they've lost 3 in a row. The secondary had serious issues, the receivers are average at best and they may not win a playoff game. But, they are relevant again. The upside is there. And, we should all be very happy about that.
BTW, I'm taking a hiatus from the pundits and sports radio the whole week. Call it a cleansing.
