That's right, Chiefs fans. Our favorite team has weathered the storm of the best QB's the AFC West can buy and it's time for the team to close it out in style. After a rugged 3-game stretch against the Broncos (twice) and an annoying, last-minute touchdown drive by Philip Rivers, the team heads into the final three games looking to get ready for what appears to be a first-round road game against the Colts in the playoffs. Say it with me: PLAYOFFS! Sounds nice, doesn't it?
The final three games look to be mostly winnable, beginning with this weekend's matchup against the "hated" Oakland Raiders, a team that's gone through more tough times than our own, if that's possible. And trust me, some of the vitriolic posts about their HC Dennis Allen are definitely not for the faint of heart. Of course, the Raiders being a divisional rival going back over 50 years means there's every chance in the world that the Chiefs face a tough fight on Sunday, but one that should still produce another notch in Andy Reid's belt. Then, of course, it gets interesting.
Where it's really going to get fun is a week from now, as the Colts visit Arrowhead Stadium for a regular season game that will likely mean little (or nothing) to either team, a game that many think will be played as if it were a pre-season contest: vanilla, bland, boring, don't-tip-your-hand and rest-the-starters. And it's very possible that might be the case, time will tell. On the distant horizon after that is a payback call in San Diego, where the fans will be at the beach and Rivers will have no one around to see him cry should the Chiefs win (and no one around to care should the Chargers prevail ... you gotta love that fanbase).
Regardless, the Chiefs are a virtual lock for the playoffs (say it with me: PLAYOFFS!) and while there are those who will vent should the Chiefs go one-and-done, there's no question that this has already been a miraculously joyous season. So, while the team may not win the division from the
Mannings Broncos, there's certainly a chance of those two teams playing each other yet again in the rarefied air of Mile High, and who knows what might happen should that be the case. In the meantime, in between time, it's all been such a glorious ride to where we all are now, a place that none of us thought our team would be after last year's debacle. Let's face it: as fans we are blessed to have a team that's done what this year's Kansas City Chiefs has done, a team that's made us smile more than we thought possible, a team that's given us renewed happiness and hope, not just for this year but for the years to come, and so ...
... to Clark Hunt, Andy Reid, John Dorsey, Bob Sutton, Alex Smith, Jamaal Charles, Tamba Hali, Justin Houston, Derrick Johnson, Ryan Succop, Dustin Colquitt, Marcus Cooper, Quintin Demps, Sean McGrath and the many, many more who have helped restore Kansas City Chiefs football to a thing of beauty. And to all of you reading this, I leave you with the words you know so well, spoken not to us directly, but words we can live by nonetheless ...
"Are you enjoying this? You should!" - Andy Reid
