What Happened To The Flo?

Today's loss has me asking a lot of questions and I want to see who else might be searching for some similar answers.

First and foremost though,

Obligatory:

Now that we have that out of the way, it's time to get down to the real issue at hand. The Chiefs defense. What happened? What went wrong? Who takes majority blame?

The rookie 7th round corner thrown into the flames against a more than competent veteran?

I'd say no.

The loss of J. Houston (and any semblance of a pass rush outside of Eric Berry)?

Possibly, but I'm still leaning towards a no.

The mad scientist holding on to the reins of the "448" going up against the undisputed best QB in the game?

Probably.

Before you refute any of those points just take a look at what Bob Sutton has managed to produce these past three weeks when we found ourselves facing adversity. We all know it wasn't very pretty. I'm not here petitioning for him to be fired or trying to take away from what he managed to accomplish during the first nine weeks of the season, but I do believe we need to take a stern look at some of our tendencies and change the approach a tad bit.

After the game I remembered again what I've seriously pondered incessantly lately. Why has one of our best defensive players over the past 4 years found himself to be declining so rapidly? I've always been a huge fan of his and was dumbfounded when his being demoted to third string lead to him playing worse than any previous years of his. I could not understand why the decrease in the talent of his opposition didn't lead to him soaring and becoming the most pivotal piece in creating one of the best secondaries in the league. I had no answers. I did, however, come up with two very plausible theories.

Either he's currently playing at less than a hundred percent or he's a tried and true outside corner who also happens to be better at zone, but capable at man coverage. I feel the second theory is much more likely. Just think about it for a bit. Has B-Flow had a "bad" year before this? Have you seen him getting beat so recklessly ever before? I can't recall a time (excluding the sodomy Dez committed against him earlier this year).

It could be all of the single high safety play, it could be that he's lost a step, or it could be that he just isn't fit to play the slot as well as he is the edge. Regardless of what's caused his less-than-stellar play, I truly feel as though the outcome of the game would have been much different had Flowers teed off against #87 today (yes, my hindsight does happen to be 20/20). Something just makes me feel like if he can hold Andre Johnson, he can hold Mr. Decker.

I understand he matches up well with Wes Welker and everything looks all well and tidy on paper with our larger cornerbacks going up against Denver's tandem of large receivers, but with Julius Thomas out today, could Berry not have held down the slot? The man highly touted for his ability to play either safety or 'back in the NFL. Could this not have come to fruition today? I'm just really puzzled as to why we allowed Cooper to take such a spanking and why our once star defender is now playing like a middle-of-the-pack type of guy. Do you feel like Sutton has made some changes (or lack thereof) that would permit doubts about his abilities as a long term solution at defensive coordinator? Is it scheme, is it our aggressive approach, is it the play calling, or what?

Please enlighten me AP.

I miss Flo.
