Andy Reid on Chiefs injury updates, Kyle Love will play nose tackle and going deep

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid met with the media on Wednesday afternoon as the team begins to prepare for the San Diego Chargers on Sunday. Reid gave the Chiefs current injury updates, complimented the Chargers, said Kyle Love will play nose tackle and talked about throwing the ball deep.

Injury updates for the linemen
Both offensive and defensive lineman are up in today's injury report from Andy Reid.

Mike DeVito, Eric Fisher and Tyson Jackson will not practice today. They are all day-to-day. DeVito has a knee sprain, Fisher has a shoulder that's bothering him and Jackson has an abdominal strain.

Jon Asamoah is going to try to practice today. He went through the walk through but has calf spasms and a shoulder contusion. "He's going to see what he can do," Reid said.

On the Chargers
As usual, Reid was complimentary of the opponent.

"It doesn't take you but a minute to see how talented they are," Reid said. He described the Chargers as "explosive" on offense and "complex" on defense.

Kyle Love will play nose tackle
Love, who signed with the Chiefs after Anthony Toribio was cut, was listed as a defensive lineman. Specifically his position will be mostly nose tackle.

"More of the nose position but he's done both," Reid said of where Love could play. "In New England, they move back and forth."

Reid also acknowledged that Love has Type-2 Diabetes, which was a thing when Love was cut from the Patriots last year. "He's got that under control," Reid said of his weight.

Third downs are a work in progress
What is an acceptable third down conversion rate?

"I want to see it at 100 percent but that's not realistic," Reid said.

The Chiefs are currently at 36 percent, which is 22nd in the NFL. The Panthers are No. 1 at 48 percent.

"If you get into 50 and the 60s, normally you're doing pretty good," Reid said.

Taking more shorts shots down the field

Reid acknowledges that the Chiefs haven't been very good throwing deep this year.

"We did take more shots down the field [against the Broncos]," Reid said. "We'll continue to work on that. That hasn't necessarily been our strength in this offense to this point but we're trying to get better at the things we need to get better at and that's one of them."

He said they thought they had a shot to get some down field agains the Broncos specifically but that "each week is different."

"We've seen a lot of man coverage these past few weeks," Reid said of the drops. "So it's tight coverage and it becomes a physical game. You have to make sure you focus that much more on the football."
