Don't Panic

Don’t panic.

The Chiefs are 9-1. Did you think the Chiefs would be 9-1 at this point? Admit it, you didn’t.

Don’t panic.

The Chiefs are tied for first place in the division. Assuming both teams keep pace with each other next week, if we win in Arrowhead we "control our own destiny" yet again.

Don’t panic.

We had hope the Chiefs would win. But looking at the game realistically, we had to know we were at some disadvantage. Even with Peyton Manning’s ankle, we were the away team in a stadium with a rocking crowd in primetime. That’s tough to overcome. Home-field advantage was probably the difference in the game the Broncos lost to the Colts. It was the difference in the game tonight.

Sure, we could complain about a few calls by the refs, but that shouldn’t be an excuse. Bad calls go both ways. We just had a few bad breaks and timely drops. This game didn’t produce a loss, it produced hope. The Chiefs proved that their defense could hang with Peyton Manning and the Broncos. They limited them to his lowest point total all year. They didn’t get enough pressure on him, which was a problem, but that can be easily remedied in the friendly confines of Arrowhead. Remember, we the fans can apply pressure to Manning too.

Don’t panic. Alex Smith is our quarterback, and he is the right quarterback. He still gets the job done, when the job is within reach. He showed some improvement tonight, but the abandoning of the running game didn’t help him any. If not for a few drops in the wrong places at the wrong time, we might be telling a different story with this game. Think about last year. You would kill to have Alex Smith last year. Our offense isn't incompetent; they had some good long drives down the field. Their arrow is certainly pointing up.

I write this brief post to remind us all that even though we lost, there is still much to take from this game. It ended up about how we could have expected. We didn’t get blown out. We proved we belonged among the elite- yes, elite- teams in the league. Denver could very well defeat New England next week. They could very well have defeated Indianapolis a few weeks ago. Who’s to say that Denver had a better chance of winning tonight than they did or will in those games? I don’t believe that. I’ll be waiting for the rematch in two weeks with steely determination and focus- much as I expect the Chiefs will be. And I fully expect a different result. The important thing for Chiefs fans to remember: Don’t panic.
