It's All About Size: Some Numbers on How the Chiefs CBs measure up to the Broncos WRs...

So I had some time to kill this evening, and I was curious to see wether the defensive backfield tandem of Smith and Cooper would be the biggest duo that the Denver offense has matched up against all year. So I pulled the stats on all of the starting corners for Denver's opponents so far, and below I list my findings:

Week # Team CB Ht

1. Ravens Webb 5-10

Smith 6-1

2. Giants Mcbride 5-9

Amukamara 6-0

3. Raiders Jenkins 5-10

Porter 5-11

4. Eagles Fletcher 6-0

Williams 6-1

5. Cowboys Carr 6-0

Scandrick 5-10

6. Jaguars Gratz 5-11

Ball 6-2

7. Colts Toler 6-0

Davis 5-11

8. Redskins Hall 5-10

Wilson 5-9

10. Chargers Cox 6-1

Wright 5-11

11. Chiefs Smith 6-3

Cooper 6-2

Cooper and Smith will be the largest CB tandem the Broncos wideouts have faced all season. This doesn't ensure success, but it does present a problem for the Bronco offense that they have not had to face all seasons. To date they have made hay against opponents with a size disadvantage. The Bronco wideouts are not downfield burners. They are over the top, physical, wideouts who create separation with their size both at the line of scrimmage and in the midrange passing game.

The median ht of opposing CBs the Broncos have faced is just 5-11, giving the Broncos a median height advantage of about 4 inches. This means the physical match up has been to the Broncos advantage all season, and we see what they have done with that advantage. The Chiefs CBs give them only a 1 inch advantages. 3 inches may not seem like a great difference, but football they say...a game of inches.

In short the Chiefs will be the biggest CB tandem the Broncos have faced all year (perhaps the biggest they will face all year...I didn't run the stats on their upcoming opponents). I think this means that the Broncos wideouts are about to face their biggest test of the seasons (perhaps of the Manning era). it will be interesting to see how the Broncos respond to a duo they can't push around.
