Howdy Chiefs fans.
Just stopping by from Buffalo Rumblings to say congrats for your success this season. You guys deserve it.
For some time, I have felt that the Bills and Chiefs were sort of kindred franchises. We're both original AFL teams from blue collar cities with unconditionally faithful fan bases. Both cities have had some trouble of late, both in economics and football. Buffalo has its wings, KC has its BBQ.
Of more immediate relevance, I think both communities have some of the most civil and intelligent discussion anywhere on the SBNation blogs. I always like playing you guys because it gives me an opportunity to come over here and get some really great coverage from the other side, and read some of the best sports writing on the internet.
Which is why I have to say I'm genuinely happy for you guys this year. In particular, I remember how bad things were for Chiefs fans back at the start of 2011 (I'm sorry we had some hand in that). You guys had a stacked team, coming off a great year, and then I recall that every player, coach, and fan tore some knee ligaments. Except for Todd Haley, who most deserved such a fate. And then there was the Romeo era, where you could beat the indomitable Packers -- and no one else.
When Andy Reid became available, I honestly hoped he would wind up in Buffalo. But when he went to Kansas City, I immediately loved the move. Philadelphia fans are notoriously some of the worst in the NFL, and I think Reid got the merest fraction of the respect he deserved there. It seemed right away a match made in heaven -- one of the greatest coaches of all time, unloved by his own, coming to a place that truly loves its team.
I fully expected Reid to kill it for you guys in year one, but (like everyone else) I had no idea that he would do so well. And I just wanted to say that you guys all deserve it. The fans, the players, Reid himself. You went through hell, kept the faith, and now you have a powerhouse team with the best NFL record set on track for the Super Bowl.
Enjoy it. If it can't be us, I'm glad it's you.
But feel free to relax a bit this coming Sunday. I mean, 15-1 will still give you the #1 seed, so why stress about the Bills? Save all that precious energy to destroy Manning.
