The Chiefs new head coach took to the podium on Monday for his official introduction. As expected, he was asked what he plans to do at the Chiefs quarterback position, which is the biggest hole on the team.
Andy Reid spoke to the Kansas City media for the first time on Monday when he was formally introduced as the Kansas City Chiefs new head coach.
But enough about formal introductions. What did he say about the next Chiefs quarterback?
Three questions for Andy Reid...
What do you think about this roster?
"I have looked at the roster and there are some good football players on this team," Reid said. "I look to add to that, I think that's important. We can all get better - me included. The quarterback position, I will dig in and look at that and we will build it. We will see how that works out, we need to spend some time on that - I need to find the next Len Dawson. It might be right here, it might not. I have to dig in, and I need a little time on that."
This is funny ... watch Clark Hunt's reaction when Reid says "It might be right here" (at about the 8:55 mark).
What is the feature that you look for in a quarterback?
"There are a lot of things and they are all different," Reid said. "You have got to be able to win football games, and that is what it comes down to. You can evaluate a lot of different things, but ultimately, what it comes down to is you have to be able to win football games. That's how you go about your evaluation."
Of course, what really matters is your evaluation of whether a quarterback can win. We'll find out more about Reid's ability to do that in April.
How are you going to handle the quarterback situation?
"I'm going to study the heck out of the guys that are here and have a chance to meet those guys," Reid said. "Then I'll have a chance to evaluate that at that point. We have some guys to be in a solid position. It might not happen this year, you never know. The important thing is you do the right thing. We have been blessed with the No. 1 pick in the draft, and you want to make sure you do the right thing and pick the right guy, not necessarily a quarterback, it has to be the right thing. You don't want to force anything. People that do that get themselves in trouble."
1. I think it's just a respect thing when he said a couple of times that he will look at the quarterbacks here. It's hard to see a situation where Matt Cassel and/or Brady Quinn are serious components of the 2013 Chiefs.
2. "It might not happen this year" .... commence the freak out! Oh, Big Red, it's gonna happen this year. Yes it will.
