While having the number #1 overall can certainly help in finding a franchise QB, there are other ways to go about finding that franchise guy. The history of the NFL is riddled with guys who were good talents that were not fully developed or utilized by the original team and coaches. Our new coach is a guy who can seemingly get the potential out of any QB, we know this because his backups have been traded for high round draft picks only to flounder under other leadership. So perhaps its a good time to look down at the list of guys who had talent, but were completely under used only to get a fresh start under better coaching and flourish, And then look at guys who were once though to have a great talent but that have not done well so far in their career. I think it is important to note, that Coach Reid can't create talent, someone like Matt Cassel is not suddenly going to throw harder.
First the guys who have went to other teams and succeed....
Len Dawson - It took this number 5 overall pick 7 years, and three teams to reach the Chiefs to begin to make a name for himself
Jim Plunkett - Number 1 over all pick who rode the bench and eventually became a Champion
Doug Williams - First Round pick who got super bowl glory, really kind of a one hit wonder but still a good story
Steve Young - Floundered with the Bucs, before reaching his potential with 49ers
Brett Favre - Second round pick went on to become all time leading passer
Kurt Warner - Two super bowl trips with two different teams.
I am sure there are many more who have found success, but i wanted to limit mine to guys that won a super bowl.
So with that are there some guys who although have talent have been underused or not coached to their full potential?
Some guys that come to mind are Blaine Gabbert, Josh Freeman, Matt Leinart, Jason Campbell, J.P. Losman, Alex Smith. Most of these guys are what we have already seen, but maybe there is some potential untapped in that trash heap
