So with a new GM, Head coach, and staff on the horizon, it made me think a little bit this morning. I'm a little worried about the fans of Kansas City. Here's why.
This town has been known for an unwavering, deathly loyal fan base. That's a good thing, right? I agree. However, in recent years, we have become embarrassing. Booing your starting QB when he gets injured. Booing 3 and outs, and just general "don't give a shit" attitude. I understand that winning cures all, but to me, this is embarrassing. I understand the frustration when the ball isn't being moved down the field, but I'll never understand the cheering for an injured player...whether it's our guy or not. These players are all human afterall.
That said, we are about to be starting over from scratch. A complete rebuild in the front office. Our fans have become impatient, and that bothers me. I have a feeling that if we start out slow, fans will begin to boo at everything. With changes as big as we are about to see, the fans need to understand there is an "installation period" if you will. There will be growing pains, there will be miscues...As fans, we need to embrace that and show the new crew our support. If the rumors are true about Andy Reid and his staff coming aboard, it will be a good staff. We will be good. But maybe not right away...and I think fans need to be prepared for that.
My biggest worry is for us to become Philadelphia or New York, and we've never been known for that. Booing our team? That is classless and disgusting. We need to embrace this change, and we need to become the Chiefs fans of the 90's...We didn't boo, even when there were mistakes.
We are about to land the hottest free agent coach on the market, and I think it's important he sees what kind of fanbase he's stepping into. He's coming from Philadelphia where the fans are ridiculous...I don't want him to think he's going to a place like that again because we've ALWAYS had classy fans. Ask any team in our division and you will almost undoubtedly get a unanimous "great fans" response. That may even extend to most of the league.
So put your big boy britches on, and let's get excited again. Just understand we are rebuilding and there will be some growing pains. We are the Chiefs, we all bleed red...Andy Reid and company are about to step into the best football city in the country...He just doesn't know it yet.
