Like the boy in "Polar Express"...

With all the discussion about Geno Smith, I find myself in the same quandary as the boy in “Polar Express”…I want to believe, but…

Last night, my wife got on my case about a file I had on the DirecTV dvr. She wanted the file deleted. I had recorded four one-hour segments of games played by Klein, Smith, and Murray; three QB’s under heavy scrutiny. Murray has since removed his name from consideration this year. Klein has dropped from contention. That leaves Smith.

The question is, “Is Geno Smith a viable candidate for the first overall selection in the upcoming draft?” I went back last night and reviewed the one-hour game segments from WVa vs. OK St. and WVA vs. OU. The segment from the WVa-OK St. game was from the early 3rd quarter into the mid-fourth quarter. I saw nothing in this segment that could convince me that Smith should be drafted #1 overall. Then I watched the WVa-OU segment, which was at the start of the game. Again, with sincere apologies to you Geno fans, Smith was only the second-best QB on the field, at least for the first hour of the game.

I guess I’d have to say that the recordings did nothing to convince me that the Chiefs should select Smith with the first overall selection (“overall selection”; key phrase). To further complicate the matter, Smith has chosen not to participate in the Senior Bowl. Unless he’s nursing some unknown injury, Smith simply doesn’t have the body of work this season to warrant the first overall selection w/o adding the Senior Bowl week to his resume.

I’m not saying that Smith wouldn’t look good in a Chiefs’ uniform, but we have to consider the above phrase, “with the first overall selection”. If some other team wants to deal with us for that first pick, we should go for it, if we can get a good price. If we move down to say, #7-13, and Smith is still there, go for it. Just for the sake of argument, in that WVa-OU game, Landry Jones clearly outplayed Smith for the first hour, at least. He could well still be on the board at #34.

So, what if the Chiefs go ahead and take Smith with the first pick? Should I simply publically proclaim the Dorsey-Reid regime a cruel hoax perpetrated on ChiefsNation by Clark Hunt? No. Not yet. But I would file this draft away for future reference should things go south later.
