The Chiefs were rumored to be interested in John Dorsey shortly after the Andy Reid rumors started. Dorsey has been the "clear-cut favorite" for more than a week so in a way this almost feels like a formality.
The reason Dorsey's name was connected to the Chiefs is because of his history with Andy Reid. Dorsey was a player with the Packers in the 1980s and later became a college scout with the club in 1991. Andy Reid arrived in Green Bay the next year, signing on as an offensive assistant and later offensive line, quarterbacks and assistant head coach.
From 1992-98, Reid and Dorsey were together in Green Bay.
Reid left for Philly in 1999 while Dorsey spent a brief stint in Seattle when Mike Holmgren went to the Seahawks, before returning to the Packers as director of college scouting, a role he held from 2000-12.
Then there's this:
Mentioned last week that Reid and Dorsey talked regularly for years. Reid valued his opinion and now they will work closely together.— Adam Caplan (@caplannfl) January 13, 2013
I like that these two have an existing relationship. It's extremely important that the GM and head coach are on the same page. That wasn't always the case in the Scott Pioli era so we've had a front row seat to what happens when that relationship goes sour and it's not pretty.
Dorsey and Reid appear to have a solid relationship. I'm eager to learn more about how often they stayed in touch over the year and what prompted the interest in Dorsey after Reid was hired.
