Report: Bob Sutton will be Chiefs new defensive coordinator

Howard Smith-US PRESSWIRE

One day after reports surfaced that Monte Kiffin wasn't interested in running the Chiefs defense, a new report states the Chiefs are likely to hire Bob Sutton, a Jets assistant coach, for their defensive coordinator position.

The Kansas City Chiefs may have a new defensive coordinator. Maybe. At least reportedly. Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News, who covers the New York Jets, reported in this article that the Chiefs requested permission to interview Bob Sutton, the Jets linebackers coach. This morning, he had an update:

Unconfirmed and all that. This is not a name that was on my radar.

(This could signal the Ryan bros teaming up in New York.)

Reports: Doug Pederson the Chiefs OC | More coaching rumors

Sutton has been with the Jets for 13 years. He started off as the linebackers coach for five years before becoming the defensive coordinator for two years. Rex Ryan kept him when he was hired in 2009, becoming an senior defensive assistant / linebackers coach. In 2012, he was made assistant head coach / linebackers coach.

Before the Jets he was the head coach at Army, and before that he was an assistant coach at Army.

Here's a little more on where he's been, via the Jets:

Served as the running backs' coach at North Carolina State under Monte Kiffin in 1982...Two tours at Western Michigan under Elliott Uzelac (1980-81 and 1975-76), serving first as defensive coordinator and later as offensive coordinator...Defensive coordinator and linebackers' coach at Illinois (1977-79) under Gary Moeller...In 1974, he was the linebackers' coach at Syracuse for Frank Maloney...In 1972-73 Sutton had his first coaching job as a graduate assistant at Michigan for Bo Schembechler.

Like every other coaching rumor and report so far, this is unconfirmed.

Update: The 3-4 will stay?
