Let's face it, the stars are not aligning for our Chiefs. There is not a slam dunk franchise guy in this draft. Even in the non-luck or RG3 years there is usually a QB worth taking one overall. Except this year. This year isn't as bad as Jamacus Russell/Brady Quinn, but its pretty shitty in terms of how top heavy this draft is at QB. But, it's not all bad since there are a lot of viable 2nd round QBs and we have the next best thing to a franchise QB on the board, an anti-QB.
If we can't find a franchise guy with the one overall pick we need to find a guy that will stop the QB we are playing. Now, this is obviously unpopular, but at the end of the day we have to come to terms with reality. All we have is a well polished, low ceiling player in Geno, a system QB in Barkley, and a project in Glennon. We need to get a starting QB in free agency and then roll the dice in the 2nd round. Alex Smith will be a free agent without a doubt this offseason. We should do what the 49ers did, by taking a pass rusher in the 1st and then taking a high upside guy in the 2nd, while having Alex Smith as our stop gap. And he is a damn good stop gap if you ask me considering the guy only lost he job due to injury. He had a top 10 QBR rating, is consistent, and can get you a 4 to 1 TD:INT ratio. We know he can take a team to a Super Bowl evidenced by last year when you consider the fumbles by Kyle Williams. And there are a lot of 2nd round QBs with a lot of upside. They are BOOM/BUST types, but if we hit, we hit big.
But, the biggest point I'm trying to make is we don't even need that 2nd rounder to pan out to get back to contention. We can win with Alex Smith if we sport the best defense in the league. Not only the best in the league, but the best unit the league has seen in years. But, to reap the treasures from our theoretical gold mine we have to acquire two things: a new scheme and an elite pass rusher.
Jarvis Jones looks like the next Von Miller and in my opinion, is without a doubt the best player in this draft. I'm not the only one who shares that opinion as Kiper and McShay both have him at the top of their boards. Of course Jones doesn't make sense in our scheme since we can't get Houston/Hali and Jones on the field at the same time, which is why we need to change our base defense to a 4-3. The league moving farther away from the pure 3-4 the Chiefs run. It's no coincidence we are picking 1st considering we suck at the two most important aspects in football: our QB play and our inability to knock the other teams QB on his ass. The Chiefs finished the season tied for 29th in sacks. We had 27 total sacks. 75% of that total of course comes from Hali/Houston. The elite defenses in this league have 50+ sacks a year. That means we have to find 23 sacks somehow and the only way to do it is to find/create two elite pass rushers. Jones would be one and the other should be Dontari Poe who needs to play a 3-technique.
The transition to a 4-3 could be easily made in one offseason. Hali and Houston are both capable of playing on the line, DJ can still be our MLB and defensive captain, and we can get Jerrell Powe on the field to complete the line. We should cut Jackson and his 14 million dollar salary. Jones would obviously take over the SLB spot. All we would have to do is sign a 4-3 OLB to complete the front 7. There are some solid guys out there like Nick Roach (Chicago) or Daryl Smith (Jacksonville). If Poe can effectively rush the passer from a 3-tech we would add the necessary sacks to finally become the elite defense we have been dreaming of. Jones looks like a 12+ sack guy a year and Poe should get 5-6 a year if it all works out. The other sacks would come from greater Hali/Houston production. It's amazing they got the numbers they did this year considering we didn't have a lead for 95% of the season, allowing teams to run out the clock and not have to pass as much.
We can win the division next year if this all plays out. Remember when the Dolphins won the division 4 years ago with a solid vet in Chad Pennington. We have Manning in our division, the Dolphins had Brady. Would the Dolphins today be Super Bowl contenders had they taken Matt Ryan over Jake Long? I highly doubt it. Luck or RG3 are not on the board, but that doesn't mean this franchise can't do a 180 overnight. All will take is a hire to implement the new scheme, a signing, and a draft pick. Lets take our gold in the 1st and our silver in the 2nd.
