Ive seen this during the preseason and now during the Atlanta game. Eric Berry is constantly being blitzed for absolutely no reason. I say he is being blitzed for no reason because he is being swallowed up by blockers every single play and it isn't conducive to pressure on the QB. This scheming has resulted in several big plays over the past month.
Today vs Atlanta, Eric Berry is in the box on 3rd and 2 with Julio Jones being lined up one on one with Jacques Reeves. The first mistake with this play is that he isnt lined up on the side of the field with Tony Gonzales to drop back into man coverage if Ryan doesn't hand the ball off for a draw. The 2nd mistake is that the only potential receiver he has to guard is Jacquizz Rogers out of the backfield. Our Pro Bowl Strong Safety has the assignment of guarding JACQUIZZ ROGERS. NO. You put Eric back in coverage and you either bring in another LB or you make Elam or Daniels drop into the box to guard Rogers. We arent talking about LaRon Landry here, we are talking about a man who returns interceptions for TDs like its his job. You PUT HIM IN COVERAGE REGARDLESS.
Now after the snap; when Berry sees Rogers is blocking instead of coming out for the screen or a flat, he begins this awkward skipping start at Ryan for the blitz after Ryan has already locked in on his target prepared to release the ball. Berry is essentially taken out of the play because he serves no purpose at the line of scrimmage. Reeves is left one on one with the athletic monster that is Julio Jones and Atlanta gets their first of many TDs. Why? Why is Eric Berry blitzing/covering a RB with Brandon Flowers injured after our secondary has obviously struggled during the preseason. It just doesnt make any damn sense.

What exactly is Romeo trying to achieve by putting Eric in the box when he sees that the safety play is lacking deeper in the secondary? I just don't understand it.
