A few thoughts inspired by my weekends exposure to NFL. I have expressed some of these thoughts before in various comments and such on this site but would love some input why I should crawl back under my rock and let the world go by without my shallow solutions to issues.
First off.........NFL refs and enjoyment of the game. I cant even imagine how anyone could ref a good game. The number of players, the speed of the game, the complexity of the rules and the significance of an inch here or there gives me an upmost respect for any good ref. No matter how good the ref is he will always be viewed as an idiot by about half of those watching when a controversial call happens. This has been the case before the replacement refs and it will occur when the real refs come back. Heading off to the replay booth is STUPID in my world. I hate stupid.
How is this for a solution..........Referees are a team composed of say 10 or so. With 7 or so on the field and 3 or so in a booth surrounded by monitors with all the camera angles available. All of the refs have the ability to communicate in real time. Now play the game and during the week between games a peer reviewed analysis of each game is evaluated and scored.......it could be done behind closed doors without the fans or football teams knowing the results. However the 16 teams of refs know how they did and should not be surprised when they are not invited to ref high exposure or playoff games. By having 10 or so refs per team they should be able to handle injury/illness issues and have the freedom to fire and hire/train individual members of their team because being able to ref playoff/high exposure games is their financial incentive.
Next bitch........football interest and baseball. I love nfl football and used to like/love baseball when the royals had greorge brett on thier team. I dont fault anyones preferences for sport viewing. Football is my preference and statisics would suggest most prefer football. But Sports talk is equally split due to baseball is getting into the playoffs and football is at the beginning of its season. Fine I understand that arugument but I dont like it.
How is this for a solution........Preseason football sucks but a couple of preseason games is needed for talent/scheme evaluation. Fine.....two games. Then the teams play each member of their division in the first 3 weeks. The teams know each other well so game planning is not that involved. Fans hate others teams in their division so fan interest is not a problem in the early part of the season. A bye week is shared by all teams of the NFL after three weeks. This week is when the world series takes place and I would suggest some marquee college football match-ups ought to happen. the middle part of the NFL season happens followed by another shared bye weekend and then a final three games against teams in your division.........and by the way divisional games are worth 2 points and regular games worth 1 point..........highest points dictate playoff seating.
Enough of my grumblings.............any thoughts?
