My Fellow Chief Fans
I come here not to bury Scott Pioli but to praise our beloved football team, the Kansas City Chiefs. I want to assure all Chiefs fans that the State of the Chiefs remains strong. We remain under the spending cap and income streams assure us that we will be able to enjoy Chiefs football for years to come.
However we can't just rest on our laurels here. There are things that must be improved in order to put our favorite team back into yearly contention for division championships. Lets look at what those things are after the jump.
First I believe we need to discuss the elephant in the room. Matt Cassel, if he were a looney tune, would be Wile E Coyote chasing a Road Runner of a great performance. We all know how hard Wile E tries. elaborate plans with massive supplies from Acme though still leave him plummeting off the inevitable cliff and producing a small puff of dust as he slams into the desert floor. Funny stuff for the rest of the league but extremely painful for Chiefs nation. Do I think Cassel can be successful. That question will be answered fully this season but initial signs are not promising. However I think that we have no viable option on the bench to come in and assume the mantle. I also don't think that there are any better affordable options out there. So given the fact we have Cassel we must look elswhere to improve our fortunes.
I think that right now with Cassel in the QB position we are in the range of 17 to 24 points on average per game. So we need to turn our attention to how to suppress the other teams points and that leads to our defense and running game. Lets start with the glaring problem, the defense.
Up until the Saints game it was hard to watch. I am not sure how the season will shake out but I need to see more than 2 effective quarters to pronounce them cured. The combo of Poe/Powe looked alright this week and getting pressure up the middle is the only way to make that outside rush of Houston and Hali pay off. Hopefully Lewis will be back this week and we can get back to a semblance of what our Defense is supposed to look like.
Charles was so awesome this weekend that it is tempting to say that our running game will be alright. Problem is we can't put that kind of workload on him every week. So we need Hillis and Draugn to step it up. We have to be feared on 1st down enough to alter other teams base D. The secret to success I think is getting other teams to adjust to what you like to do, not that you alter what you do in order to be effective. Everything we do is based on a healthy running game. in the first 2 weeks teams were able to just lay their ears back and attempt to pressure Cassel, mainly because that worked all too well. but if we can slow tha rush and buy Cassel some space he will hopefully settle in and gain some confidence in the line. How important is that? Well I think it is huge when it comes to Cassels accuracy. A confident Cassel has good touch in the short and intermediate routes. A rushed Cassel, not so much. We will never have a stellar deep passing attack with Cassel. Just saying it isn't his forte and we can't expect to materialize this season.
So in coclusion, the State of the Chiefs is promising but unfullfilled, If we can get our players to play the system the way it is designed, pull the mistakes out of the execution, we may just have meaningful games in December in our future.
