A lot of people here on AP are saying, that one of the reasons the Chiefs aren't playing to their full potential, is because of motivation, and leadership. I'm going to say the same thing. When you look at the past two rosters from the past two seasons, there are still a decent amount of seasoned veterans, who have a ton of experience, and guys who are known leaders. Guys like:
Thomas Jones, Le'ron Mcclain, Brandon Carr, Anthony Becht, and Jon Mcgraw.
Although not every one of these guys were the greatest, they all seemed like leaders on the field, and all had a lot of experience. When you look at this years roster, I can't seem to find more than one or two guys who are either leaders, or guys who have a lot of experience. Matt Cassel seems to be a leader, but not so much when they are losing 35-3. Along with Derrick Johnson, Eric Winston, and Eric Berry. Those 3 seem like leaders, but not as much as the Thomas Jones, Le'ron Mcclain type players. For instance, I don't see any of them giving a motivational, emotional, or meaningful speech, like Le'ron Mcclain did last season. And a majority of this years guys have had a taste of success. Barely any of had success in the playoffs, if you spare Ryan Lilja, and Steve Breaston.
My point here is this: I think that one of the flaws on this team, is that they're missing a true leader. They're missing those few guys that will wake up the team after a loss. They're missing those few players that know what it takes to win a big game, and know what it takes to have a great team. In no way, shape, or form, am I blaming their defensive woes, and the offenses non-capability to score meaningful points, on not having any leaders. But what I am saying, is I think that their lack of leadership in the locker room and on the field, was hurting them these past two weeks, and could contribute to hurting them even more in the future.
I do think that the Chiefs will end up OK at the end of the season, believe it or not, but I don't think that they will be a playoff team. I can't lie to myself like that anymore. maybe they'll change my mind this coming Sunday! Or maybe they won't! Who knows! But I think that their lack of leadership will end up playing a big role by the time the year is over.
Hey, miracles happen, don't they?
