Why the Chiefs won't win with the "if" quarterback

The Chiefs have looked horrible 2 games into the season. 0-2 and no signs of progress or hope. A lot of chiefs fans like to blame the easiest of targets, Matt Cassel

But I can hardly blame the guy for these losses, and he hasn't looked much different this year than any year. The defense has been porous, the Oline have been matadors, and the special teams have not looked great either. The whole team has been bad in the penalty department and the chiefs have not been able to force a lot of turnovers. I can say with confidence that this is not Cassels fault and it would be hard for any QB to overcome, but Cassel isn't helping either. He may not be the cause of the Chiefs problems, but equally he is not the soluion.

Matt Cassel is the "if" quarterback. He can win IF he has a great defense and IF he has enough offensive weapons around him. A game manager likened to Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer by the optimistic, Cassel lacks the it factor. Shame on Pioli for either not realizing it or at the very least not rectifying it. Still no high draft pick QB. Still no coveted free agent QB, just other teams castaways. It is now painfully obvious to me as a fan how bad he really is. Cassel's biggest knock on him is his arm strength, but there are many successful QB's in the league with subpar arm strength. However, all of those QB's have great understanding of the game and other skills like a quick release and ability to go through progressions to compensate for their physical shortcomings. Matt Cassel has none on those characteristics.

Matt Cassel is either unwilling or unable to go through his progressions and generally gives the stare of death to whichever recover is his first read. I do not ever recall Cassel ever going through a progression in any game I have watched. Cassel has not been the recipient of good Oline play, but I never recall him changing the protection at the line of scrimmage as is so common these days with other NFL QBs. He has little to no accuracy down the field, but what is worse is he has no accuracy outside the numbers no matter how deep the receiver. Mat Cassels biggest pass plays have always been down the middle of the field. Have you ever seen Cassel make a back shoulder throw? Throw a WR open? Take over a game in the 4th quarter? Make a single clutch pass ever when the game was on the line?

Me neither ......
