Ok, I understand a large majority out there think I am crazy for even writing a post with the words Chiefs and playoffs in the same sentence. I am not here to argue whether or not the Chiefs are going to make the playoffs... I think we can all agree that if their level of play stays consistent with the first two weeks of the season, they will be lucky to win more than a handful of games. This post assumes that the Chiefs are as talented as we all thought going into the season and that they will eventually play to the level of their talent. Assuming that happens, this post examines what it is going to take for the Chiefs to make the playoffs given the hole they have dug themselves.
First, let's assume the Chiefs have to win 10 games to make the playoffs. In most cases (not all I realize), ten wins will get a team to the playoffs. And I think 10 wins is probably the highest the Chiefs can hope for given their start and remaining schedule.
We all knew going into the season that the Chiefs schedule was extremely tough prior to the bye and then eased up afterwards. Let's start this by examining their schedule after the bye in order to determine what the Chiefs need to more immediately over the next four games.
The Chiefs have five home games after the bye, Oakland, Cincinnati, Denver, Carolina, and Indianapolis. None of these teams are worldbeaters (unless you believe the Peyton/ESPN hype - in which case, why are you even reading this article?? The Super Bowl has already been determined). To get to 10 wins, the Chiefs HAVE to win each of these five home games. Again, I am not saying that they are going to do this, I am telling you this is what must happen for them to get to 10 wins. They also have five road games after the bye, San Diego, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Oakland, and Denver. The Chiefs HAVE to win at Cleveland and Oakland. The Chiefs must also win at least one of the remaining three games. That would give them a 3-2 record on the road during this stretch, and overall, an 8-2 record during the final 10 games of the season. Let me reiterate that I am not saying this will happen (obviously given their level of play currently, it seems unlikely) – I am telling you what must happen to make the playoffs.
So, now to get to 10 wins, the Chiefs need at least two wins prior to the bye. Which means the Chiefs HAVE to win at least two out of the next four games. Likely this means they will have to win one of their two road games - against either New Orleans or Tampa Bay and one of their next two home games - against San Diego and Baltimore. I think this will be the biggest challenge for this team. How fast can they rebound from this horrific start to the season and right the ship. If they aren't able to get it done in time and start the season 0-6 or 1-5, game over. But if they can get at least two wins, all is not lost. It's a long season and things can change quickly as we found out last year - although the Chiefs look like a lost team thus far, it doesn't mean a win this week in New Orleans couldn't turn everything around.
