Trampled Under Foot

OOP's this is a football post, not an old Led Zeppelin song. Or one current bad ass Blues band. But it is our teams current demise, our kingdom's dilemma, to be tied to an antiquated scheme that is currently our defensive strategy and let's us be Trampled Under Foot. Since the imposed rule changes that have given offenses so much leeway to make plays (this is good for TV) the defense has to, HAS TO, adjust to those rule changes. Our defense has not, but is trying to be what was good in the glory days before the the rules changed.

Let me explain this in another way, if you do NOT put pressure on the QB your team will LOSE!!!! This means that the 2 gap read and react defense we have is outdated. Our team needs to make a simple change in their philosophy and ATTACK the offense. Not let them dictate what is going to happen, but make the QB adjust to what you do. Newsflash, very few QB's can do this well. And to tell the truth it is loads of fun to play as a defense. It does not look like our guys are having any fun out there does it?

We have some fine talent, guys who can make plays given the right system. Yes the 3-4 defense will work as an attack scheme and so will the 4-3. Instead of trying to win gap control, the idea is to penetrate those gaps and disrupt the offense. Sure you can have plays where the penetration isn't getting to the QB, but bet your dog that the QB is aware of what's getting ready to happen. It works well in the run game too. Try to think of the Texans style of defense here with our talent. Let lose the dogs and see what happens. Hells Bells, just look at this last game and see what some pressure did to our line and QB play.

Would this simple change in scheme fix all our teams problems? No, of course not. I believe it would give them a chance to succeed where they are not now. To me this is the biggest problem with the team as of right now, followed by the O-lines struggle to play well as a unit. I might add that I think our QB has lost his moxie to take those big hits that have been prevalent in the recent history and does not bode well for this teams future. To bad for us the timing has been all wrong for him and for us. I really believe that he had game when he came and our team didn't. Now when we are on the verge of having game as a team our QB has lost his ability to bring it. I hope I am wrong about this but I saw it with Todd Blackledge, and recently with David Carr and Tim Couch. Talented QB's who just took to many hits and their subconscious reacts to incoming pass rushers with less than stellar play.

Oh well, as much as I have been frustrated over the years with this team, I have an inability to let them loose and will be a fan forever. However the game itself has changed, and for the worse with all these rules that didn't use to be, and I need to find another hobby outside of the Chief's to while away my time and energies. Would that I could. Go Chief's!
