The Biggest Problem in KC (Hint it isnt Cassel)

The biggest problem with the Chiefs isn't the quarterback, Matt Cassel, although Chiefs fans love to blame the downfalls of this team on him. No, they biggest problem with this Chiefs team is the same thing that was their ultimate downfall last year, depth. Particularly on the defensive side of the ball.

The Chiefs struggled last year due to key injuries (Berry, Charles, Moeaki,Cassel) but even though the injuries happened at key positions the lack of NFL talent behind them was the ultimate undoing of the 2011 season. One game into the 2012 campaign and I'm seeing similar problems.

Lets start with the secondary. Flowers and Lewis both are unable to play in week one and their respective replacements are Abram Elam, Jalil Brown and Jacques Reeves? Three fine special teamers but guys who aren't on the roster for their ability to start especially against a pass happy attack like Atlanta has. Two key players in the secondary go down and suddenly it appears as if there isn't any semblance of pass defense.

The linebacking corp had its own problems this week with both Belcher and Johnson missing key practice time as well as Hali's suspension. Who are the guys set to replace them in this situation? Brandon Siler, Edgar Jones and Andy Studebaker. Siler, I admit is a solid player who could do well in situations where he has to play. But Studebaker or Edgar Jones are not an acceptable replacement for Hali.

Defensive line players Toribio and Bailey both were inactive and suddenly the base and sub packages are no longer able to do their jobs. Poe, the 11th pick in the draft, wasnt ready to be a starter and the sub package struggled to get a pass rush with Pitoitua instead of Bailey.

This was the problem last year and seems to be the problem again, the Chiefs have good starters on both sides of the ball but the minute injuries hit the team goes from good to bad at certain positions. This has to be put on Scott Pioli, he has yet to accept what the problem with last years team was and hasn't fixed it. Last year Chiefs fans suffered through watching Sabby Piscatelli and Jon McGraw start games, due to injuries. This off season Pioli said the biggest problem wasn't depth yet he didn't address it. There is no depth in the secondary or pass rushers. The biggest holes which were exposed in the Atlanta game. With 26.6 million dollars of cap room to play with, what was Pioli doing this offseason? Until this team has depth and I'm talking NFL talent, not just special teams players, in the secondary and as a pass rusher then this team will continue to struggle because injuries happen and the Chiefs don't seem to have a contingency plan.
