We CAN win with Matt Cassel... WILL we?
Let me start by saying that I am not a big Cassel fan… He is NOT a great quarterback. But, I do believe we can win with him, and was encouraged with his performance Sunday. He kept us in a shoot-out, until turnovers killed our team. The first two of which, should not be blamed on Matt. Any QB risks losing a fumble on a blind-side hit, when the O-Lineman completely whiffs on a block (B. Albert in this case.) And his first interception, was not a poorly thrown pass. (A ball that went off the hands of Moeaki, who was being held by the defender.) His second interception was absolutely his fault, and a stupid decision to throw back across the field. He was trying to make a desperation play to keep a drive alive on 3rd down, trailing by 20 points in the fourth quarter.
As much as I have complained about the poor play of Cassel in the past, it’s only fair to praise him when he does well. I believe that this team can win with Matt, if he can play consistantly like he did in the first half. Watching the Bengals vs. Ravens game last night, reminded me a lot of our game Sunday. Dalton is not a terrible quarterback, but you saw how the Bengals fell apart after a close game going into the third quarter. I believe that Cassel’s performance in the first half Sunday will be closer to what we see the rest of the season, as opposed to our second half collapse. I say this because I don’t think B. Albert whiffing on blocks will be the norm. I say this because an interception off the hands of Moeaki isn’t Cassel’s fault. I say this becasue I believe our defense will not get torched all season, as they did by Matt Ryan on Sunday, thus allowing our offense to be more balanced with the run and pass keeping defenses honest, as opposed to having to make up a 20 point deficit in the 4th quarter of games. I say this because we have seen what Cassel CAN do, (in the 1st half Sun) even when our defense isn’t coming up with stops.
Matt Cassel is not an elite QB. He will never be Brady, Brees, Rodgers, etc. However, he is no Ryan Leaf or Jamarcus Russell either. We can win with Cassel… If he plays up to his potential. With our running game and options at receiver and tight end, we do not need an elite QB to win. We need a QB who can manage the game and get the ball into the hands of our playmakers. Cassel has shown he can do that. He did it in the first half. He did it on numerous occasions in 2010. But, Matt Cassel HAS TO BE CONSISTANT. With that said, he has no excuses this season. With the players around him offensively, there is no reason to be inconsistant. I’ll give him a mulligan for the 2nd half of our game game Sunday… Because as I said before, that second half was not all on Matt Cassel. I think we’ll see more of the Matt Cassel we saw in the first half, when he takes the field next week in Buffalo. But, he’s going to have to get some help… Some help from the O-Line. Some help from receivers not dropping/tipping balls. Some help from the defense…
With all this said… Matt Cassel, this offense is built for you to succeed… You should be able to produce like you did in the first half Sunday, week-in and week-out. If you get the help I mentioned above, there are no excuses. I've said we CAN win with you... play like you did in the first half, and we WILL win with you. Let’s Go Chiefs!
