Surprise Cuts/ Surprise Makes

Hello there, AP! Today we had our first round of roster cuts. Everyone who got the ax was was pretty foreseeable. There are still some obvious names that we can not expect to see on the final roster for week one. There are some guys on the bubble though, with some being likely, unlikely, and then you have the coin flippers. My conversation question to you is: who do you think are some surprise cuts we could see? Are there any guys you have your eye on as a sleeper to make the team? Are any of this years UDFA class going to make it?

Here is my suggested list of possible surprises:

Surprise Cut: Ryan Lilja

Note the accelerated greying. He's 30 now, which is middle age for a G. He's also a smallish player who can tend to get washed out because of it. It's not that he's a bad player or anything. There just happens to be a guy we drafted behind him who hasn't looked bad at all so far. Ryan is set to make 2.1 million this year so this could be a cap casualty. I suspect he makes the team though, since we like to redshirt our rookie OL guys.

Surprise Make: Brandon Bair

This may not be a huge surprise, since he was on the team last season. It's easy to see how he could get crowded out this year though with the amount of depth we have. There's also the need to carry specialty players for our nickel. This could help him though. He has some rush ability both with his athleticism on the edge and with his power inside. There's also enough length there to have 2 gapping end potential. I remember seeing some St. Louis player stood up and dumped on his ass. I rewound the tape to see who the culprit was. It was Mr. Bair. He might be the best pure athlete on the DL.

Surprise Cut: Andy Studebaker.

The funniest joke I've ever heard (read) on AP was about Andy Studebaker. I don't remember who said it, but this is the quote: "Forest Gump ran so far because Andy Studebaker was assigned to his gap." I Laughed so hard I peed a little when I read that. It's funny but sad really. The guy is just abysmal against the run. Then there is the issue of him getting washed out all the time trying to rush the passer. He's got some coverage ability, but there just isn't enough there for me to think he warrants a spot on the team. I'd rather see what Gabe Miller has. Studie needs cut, and I'm not just talking about his hair.

Surprise Cut: Ricky Stanzi

<a class='sbn-auto-link' href=

My hopes were vested, but this looks like a re-run I've seen before. Remember Brodie Croyle? Pat Barnes anyone? Chiefs draft later round QB hoping to be the beneficiary of statistical anomaly. I wouldn't throw the towel in yet on Stanzi since it's only his second season and he's only played in limited pre-season action. This roster is deep though so we might determine that this year only 2 QBs are making the roster.

Surprise Cut: Amon Gordon

Toribio has come on strong enough to be the starter. Poe isn't going anywhere for obvious reasons. Powe is playing pretty decent football so far, showing some force and unexpected pass rush ability as well. He's also a draft pick. Gordon is a good player and has excellent versatility which Scott Pioli covets. This is going to be a musical chairs game on the DL.

Surprise Cut: Glenn Dorsey

Again, we have such depth and so many options for the DL. Is Dorsey so clearly better than a guy like Pitoitua or Gordon that it's worth paying him 5.6 million. If the answer is no then he could be a cap casualty if we can't find a trade partner.
