I've been thinking lately about Dwayne Bowe and what impact he'll have when he returns. I think that now that camp Mo. Western is over, he'll sign that tender and be in camp early next week. There will be several things to watch when he does. To wit:
- Where will he be on the depth chart? Will he be placed in the punitive position of third team and have to climb? Will he immediately take over as No. 1? Will he immediately contribute, or will he be brought along slowly to avoid injury?
- What shape will he be in? While I've got to believe that he's been training, it's not like he's never reported fat and out of shape before. It'll be interesting to see if he's in football shape. If he's not, he won't be a factor for the first few weeks.
- THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION: What happens to Dex and Breaston? Dex has found a home (finally) as a slot receiver. That's Breaston's spot, or at least it has been in the past. Baldwin is firmly entrenched at one WR. Breaston has been playing the WR2. Will Dex and Breaston split time? I know that all four will get onto the field at times, but we're more likely to go with two or three TE's than spread four receivers. I'm concerned that the "new guy" will disrupt chemistry that has been building all through camp.
One more thought. I think that Bowe holding out has given the Chiefs a glimpse of life without him. Those that think we cannot do without him have had their eyes opened a bit. He'd be nice to have... but I think we'll be just fine without him. Especially if he costs 60 million for five years.
