SB Nation has posted a ranking (that time of the season) for the offensive line of each NFL.
The Chiefs O-line is listed at No. 5 for 2012. As a fan, that sounds great to me. I wonder, though, what this is based upon?
Eric Winston's signing has been heralded as a dramatic upgrade at RT. He also seems to be serious about team unity and building a bond with the rest of the Offensive linemen. All good and the odds are in favor of success, but not guaranteed.
Jon Asamoah will likely be the starting RG. General consensus I gather from AP is that he was good last season and is expected to be better this season. Again, seems like a logical progression, yet it will be only his second season as a starter.
Rodney Hudson is expected to take over at C. Rookie center who theoretically studied every aspect of Casey Wiegmann's game before taking over. Casey's experience in a younger body, so to speak. Good plan that must be put to the test this season.
Ryan Lilja is the likely starter at LG. Subpar season for him last year with high expectations for this year. Past success may or may not lead to future high levels of performance.
Brandon Albert will surely be the LT this coming season. My overall impression is that he has consistently been at least good, and often times very good. He is still relatively young without any reported persistent health issues or history of stupid behavior (i.e. arrests, foolish actions leading to emergency room visits, and so forth), so it is reasonable to expect his performance to be equal to last season. Possibly worse, but hopefully better.
Offensive line depth has been addressed in recent drafts and free agency. The effectiveness of this group is uncertain, at least to me.
In summary and despite the questions I raised above, I think the Chiefs offensive line looks promising for 2012. As a fan, I hope to see this group become the No. 1 offensive line this season. That, of course, facilitates success for every other aspect of the offense.
What do you think? Is this top 5 prediction right on target? Will this group be lucky to make it into the top 16? Is disaster imminent (I certainly hope not)?
