The biggest obstacle facing new Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Tanney -- terminology. Tanney had the difficult task of joining a quarterback group that's been together all offseason. Chiefs quarterbacks coach Jim Zorn said on Thursday that the language barrier is the biggest issue facing Tanney right now.
"Vocabulary. That's really it - vocabulary - because there are so many things that he has to readjust. All of our words have meanings, and he's got to get those meanings down, and he's got to be able to picture them quickly and respond to them quickly, so the vocabulary is the first. So, the vocabulary is the first, and then working protections, working our plays. All of those things come secondary with the vocabulary to start with."
Tanney himself admitted this week that the playbook was his biggest hurdle.
"The biggest thing right off the bat is trying to get the terminology down and the formations, the cadence, the snap counts, the shifts," Tanney said. "There's a lot to learn. But you just put your head in the playbook and start getting it down."
It's not just Tanney; Matt Cassel, Ricky Stanzi and Brady Quinn all had to learn Brian Daboll's terminology this offseason, but the process for them started months ago.
Going undrafted and trying to make a team is hard enough. Going undrafted and not joining a team until June is extremely difficult.
